Porting Dove heads... Empty Porting Dove heads...

Post  Coupe Devil May 21st 2015, 2:39 pm

Can't swing a set of aluminum heads right now... Who in the Southeast can help me out with porting these Doves? I'd get the MadPorters instructions and do them myself but don't have the equipment access I use to have. Going on top of a 545 nitrous setup for now until I can get a set of P51's.

NOT a good choice for a temporary head if P-51's are your goal. Actually, there is no good temporary head when a P-51 head is to replace them UNLESS the pistons are notched for dual intake valve notches for both intake valve locations.

The DOVES aren't a choice. Its what I have to work with. I'm fine with cutting or replacing pistons when it comes time to change heads. Pistons were installed for a set of aluminum SCJ heads. Those heads were put on new motor and Doves are going on this one to get me going.

You will have to cut those pistons for the D0VE's.

We're about 8 hrs from Conway, but Blake Cartwright (IDT-572) is an excellent head porter. He may or not be able to get to them soon, but it won't hurt to ask. Maybe he'll chime in.

The pistons are for standard cj heads...no cutting required for a DOVE head

When using those pistons with those heads you WILL have piston to valve contact without machining dedicated OEM location intake notches in the pistons.

Put it all together as is and after the carnage you can just find out what went wrong and fix it again.

I was incorrect. The previously installed heads were standard cobra jet NOT the Super CJ I first thought.

Are you building this engine to see those pistons because that is not what HE just said.
Pistons meant for ALUMINUM SCJ's are not near the same as those for "standard Cobra Jet" heads.

OK ... now the OP has changed his mind AGAIN about what he has.  Now it is back to the P-51's not fitting.

The short block and D0VE heads are coming from 8 liter. I made a mistake about what heads he HAD on the motor previously. I am FULLY aware the P-51's would require new pistons / cut these. I don't "HAVE" any of it. Its 750 miles away currently. I am trying to get as much info as I can before I pick it up. I haven't touched a big block in 10 years. I guess I was supposed to know everything before I asked the question.

Not everything but, certainly telling what pistons you actually have when asking the question about heads which have different valve placements.

Good grief!  What type of response should the OP have had towards your comment?
There will soon be no-one wanting to ask any questions on this BBF forum.
You clearly don't like providing help. So stop posting! Please.

I have no idea why you are so grouchy lately - and I don't care to know why.

This is not my argument and randy is a big boy, but in his defense I am thankful for randy to be here and give us his knowledge for free. he does not sugar coat his answers because he does not want the wrong info out and makes it plane and simple. how you read it is up to you....me personally would much rather have a strait forward answer then some beat around the bush round about way of an answer.

Good Grief "68 Galaxie" ... I expect an informed question to be posed as well as you would want an intelligent answer given. The second is impossible without the first.

You have no more anxiety about this to think about here  ... my list of 11 names of people who I will not answer ANY questions of ANY kind for them just became 12;  and you were already on it so, those on that list won't get offended, you can all get the help they can from others.

I have no time for those who are thin skinned and need to be cajoled.

I don't give out conjecture or opinions, (unless it is stated as so),  or hearsay like some other so call "BBF experienced people" do.

Those seem like a good deal, last I saw he had .060" only listed. They are for a 3.85" stroke not for a 545 deal I believe.

Hey man, glad to see you back.  I remember when we met at the first Big Block Bash when I was pitted next to rmcomprandy and Adney Brown.   I've been out of the loop for a while too, trying to screw together a 408 Windsor for my '67 fastback.

I keep telling my wife that it'll just be another thousand bucks.... Embarassed
