Valve train noise ... Empty Valve train noise ...

Post  OldRed70 March 3rd 2014, 6:28 pm

Ok I have a 514 with Comps hyd roller setup , Comps ultra Gold rockers . And after getting engine together fired up and ran good for about 3 days . Then all of a sudden I am getting a lot of noise from my lifters or it's in the valve train more predominately on drivers side . Sounds like a solid lift lifters out of adjustment . Have readjusted the lash 3 seperate times with the noise being the same every time . Anybody have any answers or suggestions ???? Or is it normal ?????

Could be normal depending on the lifters and lobes. Some hp hydraulic roller stuff can be a little noisy.

But please tell me you are preloading them not lashing them first.

Some lifters can be picky about thickness of oil too.

Take each rocker off and inspect it thoroughly, roller, bearing, and bearing housing. Had one that kept making tappet noise on right side. Finally found the problem ,but it was a Crane Gold bearing housing busted on the left side. 5 needles had fallen out, luckily they had fallen straight down and all were recovered.

Make sure your rockers aren't hitting the valve covers.

just a thought as I've had that happen before. not having the noise to begin with is mysterious. Make sure the oil hasn't got fuel diluted for some reason. Keep us posted. ..

How are you adjusting them?

I went through this deal with a BBC several years ago....they were Morel hyd. roller lifters. Seems they needed waay less travel than i'd been used to [i.e. screwed down more] than the flat tappet stuff I'd played with.

After I had been 'enlightened' my remark was......"thanks for the instruction sheet that was not there" Rolling Eyes
