bought a 68 cougar drag car from a friend a month or so ago, with me in it it weighs 3170, thats with a 351w and c4, its all round tube strut front, 4 link rear. how much power would it take to run 6.0-5.90 with a big block? it'll have a glide in it also. thinking a low maintnance bracket motor 532 cube would be my ideal situation.

A Lot. Here is what 650 Dyno proven HP did in a much lighter car for reference. You are likely going to be in solid roller cam big heavy valve spring territory, hence keeping up with the valve train.

Your easiest path in my opinion and with the parts shortage is to go with SR-71's. The TFS A heads are back ordered along with the P-51's and the TFS 325's and the AFR's

Put a big solid roller with the Sr-71's and a Mafia with a Dominator and a good dose of compression.

If you go with a factory block because you can't get a A460 ect. you will likely have to go from the 2.37" intake valves to 2.30" depending on your bore size.

My car is a few hundred pounds lighter. Based on my time slips and dyno sheets I would guess somewhere around 800. There are formulas for this calculation.

I have gone 6.13 in fall air in the northeast

650hp
2920 with driver

summer heat it will go 6.30

Dont get hung up on the calculator. It's at sea level or a DA of zero. In 2,000 foot air at that weight you will need about 850 hp. I'm not convinced that a glide is best at that weight and power.

A lot will depend upon "how good is the car"  
A decent NHRA Super Stock car weighing 2,800 lbs. will go 5.90 all day long with only 650 horsepower.

Less of a car will need more power.

Lots of drag cars have all the right equipment to go fast.

The set-up and doing the right things to make the chassis work correctly is the major issue most of the time.

3170 sounds kinda heavy for that car. Especially with a small block. They must’ve left a lot of factory sheet metal when converting to tube chassis. Does it still have factory floors, trunk or something?

It's all steel except the hood. It does have nice aluminum tin work throughout. The guy I bought it from said he thought he remembered it weighing 2950 or thereabouts. I'm 250 so I'm just going on what he said. I'll weigh it myself to be sure.

So 3,300-3,350 with a BB? I guessed 3,300 on the Wallace for 755. 800 to 850 would be a safer bet I think.

This ones close. I think with the SR-71's you would be there. You can see how much cam they had to put to get all most 800HP. They could have raised the compression also to make up some of the difference.

3100 lb. Foxbody Mustang has run 6.01 @ 114mph
740HP on the dyno with a glide and 4.11 rear gear.
