Retard timing in high gear Empty Retard timing in high gear

I figure it depends on the combo but does it help to retard a few degrees in high gear?
Thanks

NO ... what helps is to advance the timing a couple degrees in the lower gears.

Sometimes it can help but it's been my experience that when it does the timing was just too high to begin with. Only way to know is try it!

I was thinking about wiring in a relay for that. I was thinking that setting the timing high for hard launch and quick 60 ft then retard for mile per hour and relax the engine a lil.

How tight is your convertor? I can't see it helping much unless the stall is very low, and you have to much timing all ready. Run a few 60 ft. bursts with different intial settings and see if it changes much. You did not say 1/8 or 1/4 mile?

1/8 mile. 5500 c6 converter and I don't know the name of it nor the quality of it.
Thanks

Randy,

was wondering about this very thing. So if I'm reading you correctly, you are saying if my motor makes max hp at say 34* then I should set my initial at 36-37ish and through the ignition retard the timing during the run back to the 34*? I just got a grid and it allows for that and want to take advantage of it if it helps me make better use of my combo.

YES

If it is run with some extra degrees of ignition timing in the lower gears, it can help with acceleration then retarding it back to normal in high gear; (or under heavy loading).
