piston to deck height

Hey guys, my name is Tony and im building a 429 and ive made some mistakes along the way. I have a 429 crank and rods, its been bored .040 over. I ordered some pistons online that were .040 but it turns out their for a 1988 block, so the piston sits 0.158 below deck, would that be acceptable with a D3 heads? Apparently the piston dish volume is small than other pistons...any help would great thanks guys

I think there is more to it than pistons for a 1988 block. Ideal depth in the hole is .000 to .010 the deck ht of the 1988 block is 10.332 or .032 taller than early blocks. You want the quench to be around .040 to .060 Most people have that block decked .025 to .030

You have pistons for a 460. As it stands now with your current parts your CR will be about 6.5:1 !

Get a 460 crankshaft. The rods are same between 429 and 460.

I figured that I would have to get a 460 crank, but who's complaining about more torque right  . But like Dave De said, would the block deck height be greatly affected by a 460 crank. I would imagine that the extra stroke would pop them out of the top of the block since I have an early block? In addition the pistons have no valve reliefs either...bummer....

your piston only sees 1/2 the stroke at the top. That will put you at or close to 0 deck depending on the pistons and what year block you have.

The shelf pistons can vary from 1.720 to 1.770, I think the KB Hypers are 1.770 and with a deck of 10.300, 460 stroke and a stock rod your 0 deck.

If the cranks are precise. The 460 crank is only .260 more stroke than the 429. Half that and it still puts you .028 down the cylinder with the 460 crank.

It seems like the 460 crank is the way to go, I'll track one down on craigslist. Thanks for the help guys. Do I have to buy new bearings since I installed them on this crank already or is it ok to reuse them?

its fine to reuse them as long as they are the correct size for the crank you are going to replace the 429 one with.

Ok, the crank I have was turned .010 on rods and mains so I'll get the next crank done the same way and check the clearances again with my plasti gauge. Thanks again fellas
