To deck or not to deck Empty To deck or not to deck

Post  BigRigTech April 17th 2014, 1:28 pm

My D1VE block is at the machine shop to be bored .060" over, it hasn’t been decked as I was told it was by the seller...it’s at 10.310" deck height. Carl’s custom SCJ/P51 Probe slugs are 1.756 compression height, with the 6.605" rod that puts me .024" down in the hole. With a 4.500" bore HG at .041" crushed that show’s 11.3:1 compression. I'll be using straight AV100 leaded fuel. Am I safe to deck it with my “Cheapskate 466 proven build” A429 heads that have been milled to 62cc and if so how much???

My stock 2YABC crank magged ok so balancing is next. Very Happy

On a stock block I would do zero. But some on here will tell you to leave a little for clean up. Maybe .005. But I always zero mine. Never had any deck problems to have to clean up. And if I did I would just dust .005 off the pistons and carry on.

I was thinking of taking .020 off and that would leave me .004 down.

Sounds good, .020 will make a good increase in compression and help quench.

are you just adding up the specs?
i always mock it up and see what the actual clearance is,stuff varies.

Zero deck is magic.....it's worth somewhere between 37 & 87 hp.  Laughing

About .005" below the the deck @ tdc will work good & after the jackass that is milling the block misses the 'zero' thing....you will still be 'zero' rather than .005" out.

Yes, that is just the "math" on the whole deal....I was already considering what you suggested. Let me ask this question considering possible future use, at 11.3:1 could this engine be run on the street with a 50/50 mix of 91 octane and leaded AV??? There is no emission testing here. Wink

Not a bad idea.^^^^^^^^^^ Also I get 4.36+.060=4.420. I don't know if you are using a compression calculator, or if the 4.5" was a typo? .000, .005, .010 are not pretty small amounts, just sayin.  Nevermind the bore,I see you put Head gasket.

Yeah, I looked up the Felpro head gasket the shop suggested to get the crush thickness and bore size. I was using this calculator when I was bored at work. Rolling Eyes

Those calculators are nice and make life easy. I don't know what cam you are planing to use, but 91/Av gas sounds doable, if timing, cam, and carb jetting are optimum, to me. I want to get some of Carls pistons also with the dual reliefs, they give you alot of options.

What do they claim the Lobe Seperation to be, 111degree?
