If the cam grinder says that a cam has a operrating range of 3800 to 6800 in a heavy car.

What stall speed torque converter would be a starting point stall speed ?

Also What shift point would be best rpm to shift at ?

A little more info:

3400lb car C-4 trans 13.5:1 466 ported dove-c heads stealth intake 950 quick fuel 28/11.50/15 rear tires with 4.11:1 rear gears . Cam is a .610 lift intake and exhaust 260 duration @ .050 intake and exhaust on 110.

id think a 9" in the 5200-5500 range would work.

10" 4500-4800 IMO.shift point would depend on how it likes rpm.

Cam manufacturers rpm range listed (power curve) is a range the engine makes power in. A 260 @.050 cam in a 466 will need a 5000-5500 (closer to 5500 if flat top pistons) converter to get 200-300 above torque peak. You want to leave above torque peak to your heavy car moving in the first 60 ft.

I would almost say put an 8 inch in it because the 3.850 stroke 466 wont have the torque to keep an 8 inch from being efficient. Smaller diameter and quicker acceleration.

i like to use the tq a bbf makes.8"converters aint worked for me in a 2600#car but maybe a 3400# car with a c4 would. Rolling Eyes

Doubt it seeing much street driving 85% of the time will be track. Maybe some crusie ins and racing cane on the back roads where I live.

The reason I ask this is the cam grinder suggest 3500 plus stall, and I have done that before on other cars and the cars where turds.

Also the previous owner ran a 3500 stall thru a c-6 in a 3800lbs car shifting at 6000 rpm. . I am just trying to get the most out of this engine in my chassis with a C-4 .

Lee, it would be a turd with the converter that tight, hell mines a turd with a 5400 n/a.

Its better to be too loose that too tight, in the converter world anyway.......... ask Blake what happened to his when they missed the converter to the tight side........ knocked its dick in the dirt lol.


I think a 8" might be on the small side also.......... a loose 9 would be about right imo. Thats what i had in my 472/c4 combo and it ran 9.60s on alky n/a @ 3200#s

He ain't said, but i am assuming this is a 466 on gas and a flat top deal and with a c4 it's going to be easier on the converter ain't got the torque everybody is thinking. Its also going to need to get spinning and spinning fast to move this deal. This is one build where a c4 is a perfect fit. A eight inch converter will work.

And the rpm range will be peak hp at 6200-6400 rpm.

Its a dome piston 466 on gas with larger valves and ported DOVE-C heads.

i've had much better luck with tight converters than loose. a good 60'time is nice to have but no mph aint. its about a trade off,lol.i had a shelf full of c4 converters and used them all at one time or another.one thing for sure,Lenny can fix him up! Smile

I just have one converter in each car, and one one the shelf built for a combo we never used lol.

back in the good old days a converter was'nt $1000+....so it was a good thing to have a few,kinda like cams. Laughing

My bad I missed your earlier post.................. I hate to bring this one up Rolling Eyes but Hammers deal was a 8 inch with a glide with flat tops and it was 3100 lb when it ran 6.20's on motor. A c4 will work even better behind the 8 inch.

My 514 had an 8 inch in it, Jody's 66 notch had an 8 inch in it and worked good too.

I am hoping for some 6.50s with this combo . Is this out of the question with the right converter ?

Spoke with previous owner of the engine and it went 6.80@100 mph in 3800lb car 32inch tall slicks with 4.88 gears. 1/8th mile shifting at 6000 rpm.

I ran through 4 converters before I got one right behind my 557 and all the loose ones ran the same mph and et till I dropped 200 below torque peak and it killed two tenths and 5 mph and loose to tight was from 4600 to 7600 on the break.

A 860 hp engine I guess shouldn't make peak torque at 4800 rpm 760 ft lb lol (Chevy world) company had a problem getting this one tight enough.
