Any clue on what a stock 68 302 bottom end will turn without throwing a rod? I've got this one to 6k as a shift point but I don't want to go higher really. Cam is supposed to go to 6500 but it seems to like the 5500 shift point. Just wondering how big of a cam I can go while keeping the stock bottom end. Smile Not getting one soon, I just want to learn some SBF stuff as well.

Has 4v heads, any idea on the piston cc and chamber cc? Any help would be appreciated.

is your 302 a roller or non roller motor?

most 302 blocks spit down the lifter galley at about 550 horsepower. good rod bolts, good tune, probably would make 6500 rpm no biggie. although my "friends" here say you can hit 9,000 all day long Rolling Eyes

same people that talk about how a stock bottom 302 is the best motor to run 8's lol!

I threw a rod at a lot less than 6500 on one. If its used, you never know.
Had no tack, but with a 2bbl and a factory intake i'd doubt it'd even turn that high.

Laughing Well I may be building a 351w race motor for it. Enough to go 11's. There is a cam I was looking at that goes to 7k, just wanted to know about how stout the rods are on it because that's gonna be the first thing that breaks from the rpms.

non roller but if I build the 351 that will be a roller. Two different engines all together though.

Getting machined rods, dome pistons, bullet roller cam and lifters, rings, and block...For $300 never installed. That's the only real reason we're planning on this other build. Plus my machinist has a crank. Smile Too good to pass it up, but down the road I want to do a full on race motor for it...BBF style... Cool

If this is for your maverick then a mild 302 will run mid 11's all day everyday. I had a little ole 306 with victor jr heads and intake, edelbrock 750 carb, a 290 duration 500 lift solid cam, 11.5:1 cr, old crappy mustang headers, c4 with good frictions and shift kit, art carr converter, and 4.86 gears, on a 28x10.5 tire. I shifted at 7000rpm but it had "good" rods. haha well, they were for the day.

Any street/strip sbf head on a pretty good short block will go 11's with ease.

a 68 block is really no different than any other 302 block except you can't run a roller cam without a kit. It will turn 6500-7000 just fine IF you can keep it out of detonation. most likely you will split the block before throwing a rod.

Yep, for the mav. Need to figure out what heads, I thought about Victor Jr.s but my machinist has some that I want to find more out about. The rods he has are worked over stock rods like what my BBF has, what fuel did you run?

weakest link in the sbf are the rod bolts....a 306 with ported 289 heads, victor jr, 750 dp, c4 3800 stall, 456 gears run mid to low 11's all day in a 65 falcon

So lt me give you guys an idea of what its got now.
pertronix dist.
edelbrock performer rpm cam #7122
edelbrock regular performer rpm
edelbrock AVS 650 carb
iron 4v heads which I think are stock
stock style rockers
converter??? has to be a mild one, I'd have to check but I remember getting it up to 1500 at least 2500 ate the max without burning rubber
C4 with shift kit
8.8 rear w/ posi and 4.10 gears

Ran good...But then I got my hands on it Twisted Evil And now its running better than it ever has before. Got a 14.155 out of it, full interior and all steel...

Our old 306 combo went 11.00's in the turd, stock bottom end 5.0 with arp rod bolts, hyper domes, solid ft cam, ported 70 351 heads........alky carb lol............spun it to 7000 on a regular basis.

The 5.0 block will split after a while, at that power level it took 300 or so passes.

Good rod bolts and a good tune are the 2 best things. I had a 351 with a stock crank, Eagle rods, balanced, etc... It would routinely bump the 7800 chip in the lights. Crank and main caps looked fine when I pulled it down to sell it. The factory cranks are tough. A good balance job will help it live better up top.

That was with your brothers high winding sbf mustang right?

Well what do these guys do for a good block then? The guys running real fast, do they have aftermarket blocks? The 351 block is much stronger though correct?

We'll figure poout the fuel when it comes time for the bigger setup...

the 8300+ 306 has a boss race block, forged crank and pistons, and a set of H beams with 2000 bolts.

The other stock shortblock deal that made 551 has a set of hypers and scat I beam rods, went stopped it at 7200 to keep holes out of the dyno cell..............

That was my SBF before I wised up and went BBF. I have a friend running in the high 9's with a 2 bolt block. Just keep a good tune on it. If you plan to spray it into the low 9s or more I'd step up to a good block. If not just do your homework when you build it and you'll be OK.

Not planning on running faster that 11's right now. Later on hell yeah! But that's way down the road, and we're also worried about tech requirments. We will probably need a roll cage wich we really aren't planning on doing too much as it IS a street car right now. Smile What about Racing Head Services (RHS)?

I think I got it to 6500 in the burnout box, that or a little more. Then the engines what I like to call "natural rev limiter" kicked in and I had to back off and shift Laughing I had a system, and it was wicked Cool

Well that's good to know. Very Happy And I need to email my track and see what is required for an 11 second car. Going to be one bad mamma jammba in the end no matter whats done to it Twisted Evil And I'd have to make a throttle stop bracket for the High School Nationals being that you can't run faster than 12 seconds.

Ran c16 but i got it cheap then. Good rod bolts and afr 185's or eddy xrpm heads would work with what you have.
