BlOWN BOSS 429 build progress

Heres some pics and info about the progress on my build.

Here it is full of critters, It was stored very poorly



Heads pulled, it looks like brand new except for the rust. Believe it or not this motor was never ran!

Heads disassembled, I didnt take many photos during the the tear down process. Most the rockers were siezed to the shafts, most valves siezed in the guides. and yeah, thats blue machinist dye around some of the valve seats and ports. the darkness in the exhaust ports is dirt, not carbon or soot.

I hate to see how something so great got all messed up just because of something so simple, like rust. Had it been stored better it would have been much cooler I'm sure.

So are you going to clean everything up then put it back together and run it? Or are you going to get a new crank, new valves, ect.? The pistons look to be fine and the heads could be cleaned with a wire brush and cleaner. Just me .02 but I could be wrong.

I cleaned the block and had it bored, Had to go .060 over because of the rust. The crank had to be cut .010 rods and .020 mains. The crank snout had quite a bit of rust from being exposed. The snout cleaned up pretty good but I had to order a custom crank hub from ATI to get the proper press fit. Its a real pain to order a custom hub but it is a real B9 forged crank.

The pistons that were in it are fine but the rings were destroyed. They are big dome JE forgings from 40 years ago. I ordered custom pistons from diamond racing.

So was this a stock bore block then? Just wondering, but was this just sitting on the ground resting on the internal parts? That's pretty cool that it is an official boss motor, they are worth some coin.

the block was .030. It was in a 69 mustang that sat outside for years then was moved just inside a farm building, intake was open along with open spark plug holes, crank damper was off, distributor was out, and no oil caps or breathers on the valve covers.

Well I'm glad to see that you are saving another precious car that would have been scrap, bring it back to life man.

I setup one hole along with the cam lifters and head to degree in the cam and check piston to valve clearance before taking the crank in for balancing. I just used a couple light springs from the hardware store for this part. The new comp lifters are the reason for the new pushrods. The originals are 3/8 ball and cup but the new lifters use a 5/16 ball and they are taller. I had to buy new rocker adjusting screws also, they are actually for a 426 hemi but fit the B9 rockers nicely.

Are you going to put it back in the 69 or put it in something ealse.

I plan to put it in a 70 mach I have in restoration process. My brother now has the 69 and plans on putting a modular in it. Its not that I didnt want the 69 it was just a business deal we worked out. The 69 is a GT which is actually kind of rare and might have had some value if it wasnt so cut up.

For some reason my wife cant understand how cool this is or why I want to spend more time in the garage than with her. You guys get it though right?

No, it was a "M" code GT

I know what you mean my wife said I spend more time at the shop helping my buddy with his or working on mine.I don't think the understand as what goes into one.

This is a great build and a great find.And yes I can't believe that is was never ran but I guess it's not completely unbelievable.

What are your main goals with this build?
Are you going to run the boost high or are you going to keep it safe since the heads,block and parts are so rare?
More show than go or more go than show and make it a street/strip ride?

More show than go, Like you said, the parts are far too rare to push them hard IMO. I plan low low boost and I'm not sure I will always want the blower on it. I just want a mean looking/sounding car. My plan was to maybe do something with the look and profile of the lawman boss but not interested in trying to make any exact clones or anything. For the 70 mustang I have I would like to use a heidts or similar mustang II up front and maybe minitub the rear. I dont want full tubs cause i want to keep the rear seat. I have 2 kids.

I don't think you will have any problems with a mean looking and sounding car.Just the look of a Boss and the sound of one with a blower will take care of all that.You haven't even really started on this project yet and I can already see the car.Once your wife sees the progress she will get it.Get your kids involved even if it is just grease on the nose if they are too young.

Got my custom ATI hub and damper yesterday. Now I just need a flywheel and get it balanced. Double 3/16 keyways and has chrysler supercharger bolt pattern and register.

So I guess I've been slackin'. Got sick before christmas, then my back went out. All that blew a month down the drain. Anyway, my balancing is done just need to go pick it up from the machine shop. Last week I dropped off my valve covers, timing cover, and intake at the polishers. Cant wait to get it all back and start working on it again.
