Gear change update Empty Gear change update

Post  Tore September 4th 2010, 5:00 pm

I have had a terrible time with this 64 Falcon I bought. I couldnt get it to run any faster than the 10.20s 122-125 mph. I did change the stall on the converter over the winter. This was the same drivetrain that was in my Blue 71 Cobra Torino. We swapped out fuel pumps, ignitions, Etc . I was really disgusted and pissed off. I have never struggled so much with a car.
I also posted on here about a low ratio gear set in a C6 and some said it would hurt me but I couldnt understand why it worked good in the Torino and not the Falcon.
Blake thru up a post about a situation and alot of people responded and they said it would hurt the times. So what the heck I had a set of 3.91 gears set. This was my easiest thing to change. Well I went from 10.20s to 9.87 just by swapping the gears. My best last week was 9.87 130.00 miles per hr. I had 4.30s with a 32" tall tire. SO I have pulled the low ratio tranny out and am in the process of putting in a standard gear ratio tranny and racing this Friday. I will let you know how I make out. So I guess you can gear to low.

yep, BB dont like all that starting line ratio.................thats why the glides works so well when coupled with the right gearing and converter.

Congrats on the numbers............

Tore,

A 9.87 is good but it seems like the MPH should be better than 130 for that ET?

Later Mark.

I'd say if you converted to a glide you would probably pick up 2 more numbers and the car might even hook in the rain. Very Happy The glide calmed my leave down and the car just worked much better. It let the suspension work instead of screaming past the usable torque numbers you have. JMO

I told him to change the gear to prove that it would pick the car up by reducing his first gear FD ratio. Now he needs to put the standard first gear ratio planetary back in and go back to his 4.30 ring gear. Wit the low planet there is a wider gap between 2nd and high that hurts the car from getting in high gear in the sweet spot. Could be whats up with the mph.

I am leaving the 3.91s in right now and will see what happens. I have some 4.11s and 4:30s to try but one thing at a time.

I agree with you Travis totally............ But what he is doing is cheap now because he has the three speeds. But it is proving a point. Giving direction on where to go. The car will pick up with a glide.

I think it is still geared to low in first for an efficient leave. That's a 10.63 final where he is now. 10.63 / 1.76 (glide ratio) = 6.04 ring gear with a glide to get a 10.63 final.

Example is Chuck Hagger's 69 Mustang 29.5 tire 4.56 gear with a glide. 3500 lb. Same weight car less engine (492) TFS streets, running less gear. I think he ran a 10 flat and in the low 1.4 60ft's. 8.03 first gear F.D.

With that gear he had to lift early through the quarter because it was getting over 7000 rpm before the stripe. He needs a 4.30 for the 1/4 mile

Are you going to put the stock first gear C/6 back in it with the 3.91 and see what happens?

Gear change update Empty gear swap

Post  64 fairlane September 5th 2010, 12:40 pm

Hey guys reading this post has made me think about my own combination. Would a gear swap hurt or improve my over all ET. I have 3400# 64 fairlane 30 inch tall tire 4.56 gear C6 4500rpm converter 60 foot is 1.38 and 1/4 mile at 135 9.99 sec at 7100 rpm. If I changed the rear gear to a 4.30 or 4.11 do you think my 60 foot would improve. Aaron

You just have to try stuff, gears, tire sizes, converter set ups etc. Not every swap thats good for one combo is good for another.

I agree, our best of 9.95 came with darn near 136 mph..... 3.89 gear and 29.5" tire.

Guy's ,
I fully understand what you are trying to accomplish on a budget with what you have. Given the info that you are providing and seeing which direction the car is going (faster) my suggestion would be to start saving $$$ for a glide. The car is definatley heading in the right direction. Be interested to see what the rest of the year holds as far as et and mph gains with what you have. Keep after it.
