IN CAR VIDEO 7-16-10 Empty Thanks Randy

Post  knrclark July 18th 2010, 9:16 pm

I agree Randy after this video. The tack is at about 6100 from the get go and stays there for well over a 200 feet before it sounds like the car starts to apply power. I listened to it 20 times and it sounds like a top fueler. You know how they are light off the line and then they start to apply power. What do I need to do to the converter? Just drop 4 or 5 hundred rpm's?, start over?, change brands? My converter man said this is what I needed but he has not seen this video either. I plan to show him tomorrow.

The converter makes perfect sense since I added that much fuel and nothing happened.

Thanks for the input Randy.
Kerry

BTW, Dyersburg or Sikeston are doable for me later this year if you get a schedule I would be interested.

IN CAR VIDEO 7-16-10 Empty What?

Post  knrclark July 18th 2010, 9:33 pm

TravisRice wrote:I say start over with the converter package. you have already had the thing out and worked on the converter once just recently. 9" or 10" inch in the 4500 range .. JMO.... not no hErO thats for sure. Borrow something and try it first if you can, you might see where the car likes to work from that.

Travis

Travis,

Are you saying I need a 9" or 10" in the 4500 range?

Thanks Travis, I'll hold your opinion high on my list. I have zero clue about where I should be on the converter. I hope I have people chime in and I can get a general consensus on the subject. I do not plan to ask my converter man his opinion, just TELL him what I want.

Converter has no "aggression"........it never tries to catch up in other words.
Its not about the stall, there is something going on with the stator design or something.
Injected alky likes load, which its not getting here.

I sent Lenny at UCC a link, he should chime in as he is the converter HeRo.............. Very Happy

Kerry , I like ptc for my converters. The converter I have behind my 562 is the same converter I had behind my 466. Its an 8 ". I did break the sprag and the aluminum stator after a while with the 562 engine , its repaired and I am still using it .

It flashed 5800 rpm with my 466 tfs street head engine , 6100 with Charlie's 533 scj and 6350 with my 562.

I agree with Fabio it sounds weird .

IN CAR VIDEO 7-16-10 Empty Thanks

Post  knrclark July 18th 2010, 10:15 pm

Randy, Jon Travis,

I'm glad you guys are talking to me. I haven't a clue. I really think I have a good engine that will make good power for what it is and run my car in the 5's. I've got to get a good/right converter in this thing first. I would like to do that without spending a fortune. I'm a little strapped after all the work I've done thus far.

Thanks

it does sound like a fuel car Laughing i'd get a converter.i just put a glide in this year and started with a 8"PTC,5500 on the brake.it acted too loose to me so they did a 9".it went 5000 on the brake and ran a .05 faster but kept the rpm down at the big end.Lenny is very slick on converters too, hell he talked to me even though i bought ptc's product.invest in a good converter or dont spend a dime, you cant put 800-1000 hp to the ground through a 200$ converter. Hi Kerry, definately a little on the loose side. Depending on your combo, usable RPM range and most important, where your engine makes peak torque will deterine the correct stall for your personal set up. Looking at your in car it looks and sounds to be approx. 1100 to 1400 too loose. Feel free to contact me at the shop if I could be of any help.

Try Randys 5500 8" and send your converter out and have it checked. What brand converter?

My converter man put some figures on a slide wheel and said it is only slipping 8% or about 200 rpm. He says I'm still not making power down low.

Damon,

That is one ugly dude in that car. The converter is an ATI that I got with the tranny and car. The man I got it from said he had a 514 running low 9's in this car with a glide. When I put it in it flashed about 4400 or 4500. I had it cut open and increased to 5000. I don't know it is too loose or just plain not working. The strangest thing is it flashes at 5500 but when I leave the line off the brake it goes to about 6000 or 6100 and stays there for over a 100 or 200 feet before it starts gaining rpm and then shifts. Listen to the in car and you can tell. My converter guy said it can't do that. I'm not sure if he thinks I'm fibbing or he is confused also. I know it should not do that. Look at the first video I posted and watch the paint mark on the rear tire. It makes a half revolution and then starts turning faster. I don't know what to think?

I guess if I throw Randy's in here and the thing runs 5.80's all of a sudden with the front wheels hanging in the air we'll know what is wrong then ...won't we. It was suggested to me that the low band might be slipping? I'm not a tranny man but that would explain a couple of things. I made drastic changes to the chassis and fuel and nothing happened. WHY?

It sounds like a centrifugal clutch catching up with its self to me. Smile I don't think the band would last a full run with it slipping without burning it and your fluid up .

Its hard to get a real sense of whats going on without a playback tach of sorts. You can watch mine and see the 2 step at 4800, then go to 5500, then the rpm will get pulled back a few rpm (converter doing its thing) then the rpm start to climb, then the fallback on the shift.

Like I said if this was a 3 speed we wouldn't be having this problem as bad, the glide is really touchy on the converter.

That's an interesting analogy Randy. When I first heard it it sounded like a fuel car pass. I think I am going to take the Coug up on his offer and try a different converter. At least I can eliminate something at that point. I am very limited on time and money so getting the chance to do the work is difficult for me. Every time I have to work on the car we have to temporarily relocate my buddies Grand AM project. I always feel pressured to hurry and get out of his way although he tells me it is not a problem. This car is about to use up all my patience and brain matter that I have left.

Thanks for the compliment Jon. Selling is not completely out of the question if something doesn't happen soon. 4 years and I still don't have what it takes to bracket race. I cut good lights and I'm pretty good at it if I just had a car that was consistent. Maybe this converter deal will open the door. Your first on the list if I decide to sell.

my car is fairly consistent, the driver is not though lol. The .400 pro tree deal is different story though.............

Honestly if the converter is jacked then there is your consistency problem.
