Hi everyone.
Well, I'm at this point. Talked to some of our Gurus at the bash on this (Thanks Guys).

Would like to know whats the largest intake valve anyone installed in a D.O.V.E-C?
Reason being, my concern having enough meat left to support the throat after the bowl is enlarged.
With all do respect to the people Ive talked this with, I would like to hear some more opinions before I choose a size.

This will be a strip engine specifically, so let me hear your comments.

My builder said the biggest he could go was 2.19/1.76 and that's what my heads are now.

You can go2.250/1.76.,no problem. I have my eye on bigger intake (2.300)courtesy of one of our beloved Gurus here.In a aluminum head you can. Just wondering if anyone else had done it in a dove iron head.

Compared to a iron head aluminum has more meat than a iron head. Thats my concern.

I'd stick with 2.25 - 1.76 A429 valves, great bang for the buck and they work very well. I guess you could do a 2.30 but the exhaust valve would need to be reduced, but I've never tried an intake valve that big on the stock small port iron heads.

Also keep in mind to really gain anything with the bigger 2.30 valves you will need to do a bunch more porting. You need to decide if the effort is worth the return, as a set of aluminum scj's may be a much better choice at this point. And out of the box they will in most cases out do the dove's. But its for you to decide where you want to put your time and money.

Whatcha building there Al , that your gonna need a 2.300" intake for ...hell that one of them valves that you can turn upside down and use it for a bar stool !! Laughing

I would stiick with the time proven 2.25/1.76 setup Al. There is more to flow than just intake size. Heck Coug has a set of Cleveland heads with 2.19 intakes that are doing over 350cfm on the intake. It's all about the whole deal. Cool

If you haven't got a cam yet and can spec one accordingly, a 2.300" valve will increase the average intake flow, (providing the bowl is 91%), MORE than a large 1.760" exhaust valve, (upsized from a 1.710" size), will help the exhaust side; (when normal bowl porting techniques are used).

Actual flow testing and dyno testing bears this out.

The thing to watch for, (and this is the biggest sanffu), is that most piston intake valve notches will NOT accept an intake valve that large ... hence not usually going anywhere near that large.

I was curious how large I could go on the bowls (%) without hitting water...Since this is only a Victor port match, I think Ill go with the CJ's. I dont want to take any chances, plus waste a bunch of money on a monster port-job to make the 2.300's work.

90-91% with the 2.25's is safe. Its the exhausts that you need to watch.

You don't need a Monster port to install the 2.300" valves correctly. A good transition to the required 2.070"/2.090" bowl size is all that is required and that is at the choke point only 1/2" under the valve. PLENTY of metal there.
When you go up into the port IF you wish to make it bigger ... you are on your own.

You won't see much, (very little), maximum CFM increase. What you will see is a major increase at .300" and .400" and a little less increase at .200" and .500" valve lifts.
