Guys,

Some of you guys have seen my Dad's '67 Cougar before at the Bash.  Well the old 302 he stuck in there to get it driving a few years ago when his 351 was down is low on oil pressure and is about to get yanked...

He had a stock 5.0 rebuilt a year or so ago for another project and I'm about to swap that engine into the Cougar but I want to add a cam for a little bit more power.  Not looking to go radical as my mom will start driving the car here soon on the weekends and nice days.  The engine is a fresh rebuild that my Dad assembled last year and is currently sitting on the stand.  Block was honed, new rings, bearings, heads were rebuilt, etc...  The rest of the parts I have from the other engine combo are the AODE trans, Edelbrock F4B intake with a 600 Holley on top, 1-5/8" Hedman 3/4 lengths with dual 2.25" exhaust.  The car is a weekend cruiser and future road trip car...

What are my options cam and spring wise that will allow me to simply swap the cam and springs before I stick this in the car?  I just want to add a small hydraulic roller cam that will work with the stock springs or upgrade the springs to some that will work with the factory retainers and rotators.

I'm not looking to flycut pistons, change valves or retainers.  Just want to drop in a better roller cam and change the springs.

I see that TFS makes a spring kit that works with the stock retainers and rotators.  Who else does?

Thoughts?  Advice?  Recommendations?

Would a stock Mustang roller cam be a good choice here?

B and E alphabet cams help and will operate with stock roller springs

If you still have the gt40 heads put them on with any mild hydraulic roller and it will run great

Randy Malik is sending me a stock HO cam. That'll give it a bit more than what it has now. If not, I'll stick an E in it. Good to know they will work with the stock springs.

The heads we got from you are on the 351 that was in the car before. I'm putting it back together with a custom cam from Blake and it's going in my Futura. I have everything to assemble it but the lifters and pushrods...

The GT cam likes to use a 1.72/1 rocker arm, (gets it to .478" valve lift), just like the 93 Cobra engines had; (although they also had a better head).
Stock springs and stuff can still be used up to .505" lift but, RPM capability won't be much over 5,000 RPM.

Also, WHY do you need to use the stock production retainers...?
Ford Performance Parts offers a special retainer set, (8 of one kind and 8 of a deeper kind), to replace the stock retainers and rotators so you can use the same springs on the intake and exhaust side. M-6514-B50 is the retainer set.

Back in the early 90's my brother had a 65 mustang w/ 289 HO. we bought Z28 valves and springs over the counter at the local part store and it worked pretty good with a homegrown porting job. Milled the stud bosses down and installed screw in studs from a Cleveland. It stopped the valve float with a fairly mild wolverine cam. There wasn't 350 in town that could touch it. That thing would flat out embarrass a Camaro and even a vette or 2. lol!

This cam and the valve springs above work well and have used this set up for about 5 budget builds

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/tfs-51403001?seid=srese1&cm_mmc=pla-google-_-shopping-_-srese1-_-trick-flow-specialties&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI7q-t-P-J2QIVnrjACh3iQQfSEAQYASABEgITXvD_BwE

The Obove parts in a 3100lbs car with rpm performer intake 650 carb long tube headers 9.5:1 compression 4.11 gear 28" tall tire . 7.70 in the 1/8 and very street friendly. This ^^ particular car has been built with used parts and a very early set of Edelbrock heads with no port work and still has bolt down 1.6 rocker arms 1.90 1.60 valves . 7.70 all day long up hill TNT night in the middle of summer. Cheap retro fit 130.00 roller lifters in a 77 non roller Block. 3500 stall c4 automatic home made cal tracs !

All of the vehicles I have done this set up on from 5 speed to automatic and carb to fuel injection depending on weight and gear have gone 8.20 to 7.70 in the 1/8 .

To make it simple ... that dual valve spring kit does not directly fit onto a stock production, cast iron 5.0L head. Also, the valve tip lengths of the intake valves and exhaust valves are a different length on those heads.

It is my understanding that this is to be simply a "pepped-up" drive around car and that's all.  Maybe I am wrong about this.

Yes, That Alex's Parts kit should certainly be OK with the -.050" locks on the intakes and the +.050" locks on the exhaust side ... Not like the Double Spring Trick Flow kit using 16 of the same retainers and locks.

Ford Performance Parts used .090" different depth retainers on the intake and exhaust side to accomplish that.

THis will be just a cruiser only. It's got a fairly high (3.00:1) gear and an AOD so I wanted to give it some more low end power without having to put a whole cam/lifter/spring package in it. The heads checked out fine at the machine shop. Valves/seats were touched up, spring pressures checked, etc. Just looking to stick a little more power in it.

The stock HO cam will do the trick...

My mom will drive this car more than any of us. So no need to have a rolling, lumpy idle and too much power. She's got a heavy enough foot already...!

You could change the rear gear ratio to 3.73.
