Driven FR50 and Morel Lifters.... Empty Driven FR50 and Morel Lifters....

There has been some questions from the Engine Builders that they want to run a 50W oil. The “W” winter rate doesn’t really tell whether you can use a specific oil with hydraulic roller lifters as I have learned from both John Callies and Lake Speed Jr. What does matter is the centistoke number.

Driven has supplied this chart on flow ratings on the Driven FR50 and other popular 50W oils:

Ambient Temperature Oil Flow Rates
Oil Driven FR50 VR1 Brad Penn
SAE 5W-50 20W-50 20W-50
60F 328 cSt 786 cSt 627 cSt
75F 213 cSt 451 cSt 373 cSt
90F 144 cSt 275 cSt 235 cSt

High Temp Flow (for reference)
275F 9 cSt 9 cSt 9 cSt
300F 7 cSt 7 cSt 7 cSt

I have talked with John Callies at Morel about the Data above and he said the FR50 will work with the Morel lifters. For those that want to run a heavier oil you can run this with your Morel lifters.

What cSt numbers are required by the Morel Hyd roller lifters? Is there a range?

I also assume most oils when cold would not function well (high cSt number) at high rpm with Morel lifters.
Not that anyone would take a trip down the 1/4 mile with a cold engine.

At 90 degrees 150 cSt. The marine offshore guys do all the time. Worked all week.....get to the marina. Load the cooler. Start the boat. Pull out of slip. Hit the the NO Wake buoy on the "Let her rip side" push the stick all the way forward. In these cases most can be at the bouy in 10 minutes or less. I had a Merc 525. It took a little over 14 minutes with a closed cooling system to the oil temp to reach 140 degrees. Superflow tells us don't pull an engine until your at 180 degrees. This part of the HP market does it all the time.

from the Brad Penn 20-50 semi synthetic Penn-Grade 1 spec sheet it looks like this oil would work also - with some attention
to oil temperature before high rpm use. (Oil pan heater)
20-50:
@ 40C (104F)  159 cSt
@ 100C (212F) 20 cSt  

15-40:
@ 40C (104F)  113 cSt
@ 100C (212F) 15.5 cSt  

100C is what I would assume "normal" oil operating temperature when engine warmed up.
