i have a cj7 jeep with a 429 bbf c6 auto and only 2wd I don't drive it on the road other than to get it in to the sand dunes here in mich
the motor is a stock 429 with dove heads has intake and headers and a big lift cam
probably in the 4 to 425 hp range I bought a new converter when I had trans rebuilt that was suppose to be a 2200 stall but it never stalls out wonder what would be a good converter to put in that I can get better off the line and still be able to street it some without burning my paddles off lol any input would be greatly appreciated

I go into gear and it is going I have a lot of break to stop it may as well be a stock converter

2200 is pretty much a stock converter, your engine numbers should not be the problem. If it doesn't go to 2200 RPM while loading on the foot brake I would question the front pump.

Most peoples 2200 stall converters are stock.

Call Lenny, UCC, or myself and we can set you up with a custom unit to fill your needs.

From my experience many years ago with the supposed 2200 converters , don't both they are pretty much same as stock

I have seen them built on 11" and 12" shells. I have a 11" that does 2,200. Stock was 1,800 I believe.

The point is the converter is new and the transmission is rebuilt, my question is; Is the converter currently performing correctly, or is it not properly engauged, pump problem VB problem etc. There are other things that may affect the performance, and buying a rather expensive converter to find out it doesn't work properly due another problem could be an expensive lesson. I believe 1800 is the stock number and at 2200 a little over 20% may be all that is required if it is working properly.

I'm not a "transmission guy", I'm just curious what rpm are you idling at? I have roughly same HP 390 w/ C6, 2000 stall. It still sits still at idle (1000 rpm) Drives great on the street. Stalls 1900 on foot brake. Rolls backwards down hill when in gear idling etc.

I idle at about 800 will not roll backwards in gear at idle on very steep hill this is a dune toy I run 20 wide paddle tire on it and would like to drag it a little but with my converter it is a turd off the line till the cam starts to get in range then its great but don't want it to have to rev to 3500 to make it move I would like it around 2300 to 2500 maybe a bit more I dont think I rev more than 5000 and I dont street it much just play in dunes

As mentioned it would be best to call up a converter company but if you supply some more info, cam details (duration,etc) and weight of the vehicle, an approximate stall could be figured out.

What gears are you running and are you using low range?

only two wheel drive no t case I have a comp cam 290 cam truck weight is about 3000 ish I had 456 gears in it I tore them out last fall now I building a 9 for it and not sure what gear I am putting back in it I have a 488 set and I have a extra member so may do some playing with gears this summer

I see a 292 comp cam, no 290. The 292 recommends a 3000 stall and a power range 2500-6500.

I would get a 3500ish converter and try both sets of gears like you mentioned.

If it is in fact the 292 cam i think you could help yourself out by getting a custom ground cam or at least a dual pattern.

I have only built one transmission ( yes it still works 15 years later), But I'm pretty sure even a factory converter wouldn't be that tight at 800 rpm. Something else is wrong here. You got me curious, I'd like to know what you find. wish I could be more help.

Advance the cam 2-4^ see if it brings the converter in.

i was wrong on cam it is the 270 extreme energy cam not the 290 it does good mid range and up top i will talk to my trans builder se if he can look at trans see if something is wrong when i get rear end back together
