FRPP oil filter adapter Empty FRPP oil filter adapter

Post  maverick October 26th 2014, 12:06 pm

For those who use one, please note...this is a good unit that allows you to clock the filter to any position and works well, BUT....

IF you clock the unit so that your filter is pointed toward the front of the engine, and...

IF your car is likely to do the occasional wheelstand combined with a potential hard landing, be advised that you should add a support of some sort to prevent the laws of physics from ruining your day at the races. Otherwise.......

The weight of the filter full of oil works in conjunction with the impact of one's return to terra firma to effectively turn the adapter in a counter-clockwise direction, thereby loosening the unit enough to allow 80 psi of oil pressure to push past the o-ring and empty the contents of one's oil pan onto what was previously a dead-hooking track. The result is a smoke filled E-ticket ride which causes a dramatic drop in one's popularity polls in the pits and subsequently adds friction in one's harmonious marriage when laundry day rolls around.

Don't ask how I know.

That sounds awfully like, that you have had a "personal experience" with the filter adapter rotating. More torque on the bolt next time maybe? Or clock it downwards until it makes contact with the oil pan and can't go any further. Cool

Actually guys, I am thinking of adding a support strap of some type to prevent this happening again. It really makes me think about some of the ways in which forces are applied to parts of racecars that we might never consider. Suspect In this case the hard landing probably had much the same effect as a downward smack on the filter with a rubber mallet. Considering the weight of the filter full of oil, I'm really not surprised it happened, although I never gave it a thought before I forced a cleanup on aisle 1. Shocked I'd clock this thing differently as Charlie suggested, but clearance issues are the reason for it in the first place.

Live and learn.

If you want to use a clamp around the filter and a cable support, I have all sizes of clamps for header tethers and could crimp a nice cable for you...
Just thinking

oil filter adapters had a small pin that indexed the adapter orientation on the block's oil filter pad.
