Is my new engine a 429 SCJ ? Empty Is my new engine a 429 SCJ ?

Hi All,

I'm new to this group, glad to have found it.

Today I picked up a short block, heads and intake. The block casting is D0VE-A, 2 bolt with the thick machined-flat webs, the timing cover is still on so I can't see the front. The engine block partial vin is: 0R112372 the letter could be a P? Casting date is 9K11 with a casting mark W2, DIF is the foundry. The assembly has been sitting for 40 years and the owner said he pulled it out of a Torino. The heads are D0OE-R casted with-in three days of each other. What more info do I need to give? I've read that all SCJ's have 4-bolt blocks. I've read that some 1970 & 1971 SCJ's had 2-bolt blocks. Don't know who to believe! Thanks for any help you experts can provide, and thanks for reading!

Check the rocker studs and see if they are the positive stop kind or the adjustable type. The CJ used the non adjustable, with a shoulder. I think it was mostly the Cobra Jets that had the 2 bolt blocks. The SCJ's had a Holley carb. pad, and the CJ's where the Quadra Jet style base. The SCJ's came with TRW forged pistons.

Yep looks like a 70 429CJ out of a Torino. Great engine to start with. Lots of great info on this site. Welcome!!!

D0OE-R heads are Cobra Jet / Super Cobra Jet heads for sure. The only difference in the heads are the rocker studs. SCJ's have non shouldered studs for ajustable rockers and the cj's have positive stop shoulder for non ajustable rockers.

All Super Cobra Jet blocks are 4 bolt mains but are the same castings as the 2 bolt blocks. Block castings are D0VE-A and D1VE-6015-AA and are identified by the thick main webs that extend to the pan rail. Some castings have CJ cast in the lifter valley. Some of these castings were also used in non cobra jet applications.

Cobra Jet and Super Cobra Jet have D0OE-A connecting rods with football head shape bolts.

Cobra Jet have cast pistons with cj cast in them. SCJ's used forged pistons made by TRW.

Cj and SCJ engines have oil pans with a baffle in the sump. They also used a different harmonic balancer. I think its D0OE 6316B.

Cj's came with a rochester spread bore 4 v carb, SCJ came with a 780 cfm holley dual feed.

They also came with chrome dipsticks.
