Starters Empty Starters

Post  BigRigTech January 25th 2014, 12:15 pm

With my 10:1 468 I used a new stock GR starter for a 1992 F350 with a BBF. Will this last long at 11.9:1 on my 472 build or is there a better starter option that is known to last that's not going to require a mortgage? Very Happy

There are plenty of guys using that starter on bigger badder engines than that....

However there are folks that seem to be able to break anvil's around... They have trouble with starters of all types.

Standard deal, auto trans, don't forget the oem block plate yada yada. you should be fine.

Overkill the ground on the whole car. .. Upgrading to 16 volts is a good idea anytime you can.

Great replies on this one.
Grounds are so important as well as the starter locator plate.

The locator plate will be one of your mid plates when I feel well enough to figure it out Keith. Hopefully next week in the evenings. I used a stock loacator plate last summer. I have everything well grounded in the car, I welded ground studs to the body for anything that needed grounds. I figured I'd ask about the starters as I don't have a spare and I want to get one. I planned to keep the stock starter as my spare if I needed to upgrade.

My MSD isn't locked out, it has the lightest spring with 21 degree bushing in it.

That and the positive also. Run a good fresh solenoid. Alot of starters are rebuilt poorly, get one with a lifetime warranty. Keep a good battery and keep it fully charged helps also.

Fox headers wrap around the starter tight so some reflective heat sheilding will help heat soak alot. KEEP it COOL Shocked

Yeah, that was on my to do list as I already had to wrap the cable to the starter as it was pretty close to the headers.
