"Motors Auto Repair Manual 1970" Empty "Motors Auto Repair Manual 1970"

Just got this book from my dad. I was looking through it and noticed a possible way to identify a 1968 through 1970 429's vrs 460's if the motor is stock. According to the diagrams for timing marks, you should be able to differentiate between the two by the timing marks on the crank vibration damper. Per the diagrams it shows a 429's marks starting at 10deg ATDC going up to 30deg BTDC and the numbering in between the hash marks. Then if you look in the Lincoln section where the 460's are. For the 68-69 460's, the marks start at 0deg TDC going up to 30deg BTDC and the numbering in between the hash marks. It also shows for the 1970 460 release, marks starting at 10deg ATDC going up to 30deg BTDC but the numbering is below the hash marks (towards the fan). If this is the case, and the damper is original to the block. Each motor should have unique timing marks and you should be able to differentiate between the two without tearing into the motor. Does anybody know if this is true? And how accurate are the specs within this book? I know this inquiry wont solve the "do I have a cobra jet" question, I know that's a whole different quagmire.

I have some of my Dad's old Motor Manuals they are blue in color for stock rebuilds the specs are right on in my opinion they are the best engine manual they are. Easy to look up stuff and detailed and you don't have to look all over the book to fine something. I wish I could fine some more with the newer cars/trucks in them. I got some of mine ready to fall apart and warn out.

I'm not sure about all 460's, most have additional weight cast into the harmonic balancer that the 429's don't.

Dave.
Actually some 429's have a belt groove cast in the harmonic balancer and some Lincoln 460's have a power steering pump in the front cover behind a different thickness harmonic balancer.

I have an old Haynes manual on Ford engines (289 thru 460) that has a sbc intake manifold pictured in one of the sections on sbfords and towards the end of the book they talk about general tunnel ram intakes with a pic of a sbc dual quad tunnel ram intake Rolling Eyes . This REALLY PI$$ES me off Evil or Very Mad . Makes me want to question the accuracy of Haynes Mad .
