Guy's i purchsed a set of Oliver rods some time ago and was just looking at them and pulled out the calipher and measured them and theu come out 6.812. Is this normal for rods to be slightly longer when new? also would pistons for a 6.800 strke still be right depending on how much deck height is left in the block

The rods should be 6.800 if that's what they are suppose to be. I would suspect my measuring technique before believing the rods to be off .012 on all 8 if it were me.

Your measuring device will do the job, although Bret's idea is worth checking!

I'm going to recheck them but most likely they are 6.800. i measured from the big and small ends of the holes. Then added 1/2 of the diameter of the holes to my measurement to get that reading.

Sounds good to me Ace. If you haven't already, measure all 8 and compare.

Have a good day,
Dave.

I agree with Brett. Your measuring technique may be off.

If you are using square jawed calipers, you cannot do it the way you described. That method will only work if your caliper jaws are knife edged. By square jaws, I mean if they have a "flat" surface on the inside edge of the jaws.

Then you need to find the shortest distance between the big end and little end. Then add 1/2 of the diameters of both ends.
