Rocker arms ? Empty Rocker arms ?

Post  jason February 25th 2013, 12:51 am

I've got a set of Harland sharp rollers, they're 6 years old and I noticed a few of them have nicks in them from hitting the valve springs. What are you guys using that will clear large dia. Valves ?

I had a set of Harland Sharps that did the same thing. If the interference is bad enough, it'll make the valve retainer "flutter" and beat the locks out of it. In my case, the engine nearly swallowed a valve. affraid You can gently massage the trunnions with a die grinder and run 'em...Just make sure you don't leave any filings in them.

I think you'll find the Crane and Scorpion rockers have a smaller diameter trunnion that will solve your problem, too.

The nicks are'nt very big. It's strange that just a few are marked. Thanks ill look into the others also.

Sounds like your interference problem is very slight. If they were mine, I'd touch 'em up with the die grinder and run 'em.

Jason I would give them some extra clearance just in case, so it doesn't do it more and cost you a valve, head, pistons, and block, and rotating assembly..

Pay close attention to them and see if it was the intakes only, or the exhausts only. Also, double check and see if it was really the edge of the retainer that was hitting the underside, or if it was the o.d. of the spring itself. Report back and we'll proceed from there.

I can't remember the part number, but I got them outta jegs, and the heads are edelbrock rpm's. I'll take a look at the rockers to see where they are hitting and which valve it is.

I just took a look at the rockers, they all have a small mark on them just through the anodizing. The retainers are beveled on the radius, It looks like its hitting the edge of the spring. I'd send a pic if I knew how from my iPhone.

Sand and/or bevel the edge of the valve spring, all the way around the circumference of the spring. Many Manley springs have the top edge already beveled from the factory. Secondly, if you want,, just very lightly use a tootsie roll and sand the underside of the rocker arm where things were making contact. Sand out any stress risers.

If they are Edelbrocks, then I am assuming that you have steel retainers on them, not titanium. If only the intake rockers showed signs of the spring hitting the underside of the rocker arm,,,,,,then you have valve float. Edelbrocks are notorius for having some fairly weak springs on their assembled head packages. So, you need to either upgrade the springs to something stronger, or you need to switch to titanium retainers.

Hope this helps,

Charlie

I have titanium retainers. I ordered the heads bare and had them ported, and a custom cam with springs to match. The spring is slightly bigger than the retainer.

Okay, my bad. Then it sounds like all you need to do is bevel the outer edge of the spring itself, knock that sharp edge off of there, and you'll be good to go.

Hope this helps,
Charlie
