Powerglide Cooler Line Pressure Empty Powerglide Cooler Line Pressure

Post  501ranger February 13th 2013, 10:26 pm

I bought a used Powerglde set up for my big block mustang, and I Have a few questions. I have read about poeople having thrust bearing issues caused by to much convertor charge pressure or cooler line pressure. My questions are,
1 How do you measure the convertor charge pressure?
2 Is the convertor charge pressure compareable to the cooler line ressure?
3 What is an aceptable cooler line pressure?
4 If the cooler line pressure is to high, how can I reduce it?

Thanks for any advice.

You're worrying about a lot of things that you probably don't need to worry about.

Actual line pressure is more important. Depending on input shaft you may or may not have cooler flow. Usually thrust issues are caused by tight clearances and a ballooning converter.

It actually destroyed the thrust bearing on the crankshaft, so I am trying to verify that everything is right so it doesn't happen again. The engine has been together for about five years with a C4 transmission. I installed the powerglide and after 9 passes I noticed the thrust problem. I know the driveshaft yoke also started to twist, so that could have contributed to the problem. I measured the pressure in the cooler lines at 80 psi in first gear. I was hopeing someone has a guideline for how much pressure to run. And if 80 psi is to much, how can I reduce it? Is there something else I need to check?

80-100 is fine. Ours is over 100. We run a little more internal line pressure than what you need due to the higher horsepower. How much converter pull out do you have? What converter is it?

Flexplate to convertor clearance was atleast 1/8 inch, the convertor was a 9.5 inch unit with anti-balooning plates and the powerglide input shaft that was custom made by a transmission shop. The convertor still looks fine.

I smoked the thrust bearing in my SBF/C-4. I had added another trans cooler to the circuit. The cooler lines had too sharp of a bend and restricted the flow, which cause the converter to push out. I re-routed the cooler lines and eliminated a couple of 90 degree fittings. I haven't had an issue for 4 seasons.
