I have a 429SCJ I built in 1985 has 10k miles runs great but I was reading a thread some one asked about solid lifter cam for street and some one chimed in about no zinc in oil these day so my question is why do you need zinc for solid lifters and what is the best oil for my motor can you buy zinc and add it to say synthetic oil if so were can I get it and what weight oil should I use like I said I have solid crane cam with crane rollers thanks for any help about this problem

Clickey>>> http://lesfrickshun.com/ZINC__ZDDP_.html

Simply put, it is a lubricant that was once standard in most common oils but has now been reduced/removed.

I think the zink thing pertains to flat tappet. Not so much with roller

"If you are old enough to remember the days of leaded gasoline, no lead worked fine at the expense of valve seats and valve guides. The same is true today, current SM oils will work in your performance engines, but at the cost of accelerated camshaft wear, timing chain to gear, push rod to rocker arm, piston to pin and pin to connecting rod. The list goes on. Although, the ZINC (ZDDP) additive package was aimed at the flat tappet market, you can see the need in roller motors, when you look at all the other parts affected." Personally I would not run without it in any performance engine I own.

I'd look for an oil formulated for your engine. Joe Gibbs, Lucas, Brad Penn are just a few that come to mind that make engine oils for older engines like yours.

I found two hy-per lube for flat tapper cams but does not have zinc in it or phosphorous in it and Lucas engine oil additive but says to drain after 1000 miles so will the first one work even if it don't have zinc in it but is made for flat tappets. And yes I remember leaded gas and still by lead for my gas I rebuilt this motor in 85 and it has only 10k miles and the valve job is a back in the 80s 3 angel valves job with old seats for leaded gas anyway I want the best for my baby and need to get the right additive for her i like for my girl to be well lubed even if some one know a web site to get the right stuff thanks

First item of attention is valve spring pressure. Is your valve spring pressure appropriate in regard to your application? To answer your question as to why, the wear protection of today's oil is not what it was, before roller lifters and such entered public transportation. An oil pan that contains a quality oil, petroleum or synthetic and an additive that contains Zinc will do fine as long as your spring pressures are in line and you maintain a good tune-up. I have good performance from The COMP additive.

Dave.

Mobil 1 15W50 has high zinc content. A little googling will get you more oil info than you want. Cool

I work at a caterpiller dealer and go to lots of training classes on machines..hyd...engines..etc.. CAT uses roller cams and lifters in most all their engines. They dont make their oil but do have it mixed so to speak to meet their requirments.. They also say zinc plays a vital role in engine life.. If you look on the back of a gal of their oil it says CI4/CI4plus. I have been told this referrs to how many parts per million(ppm) of zinc is in the oil. At one time i had a sponser that provided all my engine oil(penzoil). We ran it for about 3yrs and changed every other weekend.. Since i attended the cat class on engine life i switched to the cat oil(15-40). I can tell you my bearing look much better after 150 passes than ever before.. And i have ran my cam which is over .800 lift for 4 yrs and still looks great. Just my 2ยข. If you got a cat dealer near buy its about $80 for 5 gal or can be bought by the gal
