Post  mikey hefner June 26th 2012, 10:27 am

ive installed a mild built 466 for now while getting build info for my other motor, i have run into a problem w/ my headers. after installing 1.5 inch k member spacers now the steering shaft hits the num 7 tube and i cant get the shft to mate up with the rack. im using a flaming river manual rack. is there any way around this without bashing the tube in??

what hitting?

They make 2 different shafts, a big one and a slim one. ?If its the jount hitting and you have the big one, the smaller one might solve your problem.

the off set bushings might also help, by slightly changing the angle of the shaft. Again depending on whats hitting.

not sure which one it is, sorry. its the shaft that comes with the manual conversion kit. the kit has a small shaft that slides into the steering colum, then a u joint, then the long shaft, then the u joint conecting the long shaft to the rack. the long shft is whats hitting the header tube. looks like if i removed the k member spacers everything would fall into place. ive just read alot of folks using them to improve driveline angles.

I hammered the shaft back towards the firewall and lengthened the stock shaft. It changed the angle enough to work satisfactorily.

Frank:
If the LL is hooked up after the prop valve, wouldn't that require 2 line locks ?
One for the left front and one for the right front ?

Just curious about your post because I have always hooked mine up before the prop valve.

You know I've read that before, but every one I have installed this way works just fine. Go figure.

NHRA and IHRA rules state after the proportioning valve , you need to plug the the one front port on the proportioning valve and a tee on the line lock to the 2 front lines

Will that brake booster clear a BBF valve cover? Sorry to drag this thread even further away from the OP's question.

the reason behind being after the proportioning valve is if its before the proportioning valve can lock over to one side and then you will only have front brakes

I had to drive my steering shaft into the column to get the U joint as close to the firewall as possible. I ended up adding length to the shaft that goes to the rack. Stock power rack, 1.5 inch K member spacers. I did shift the column over a bit as well. The Hookers are a huge pita!!! There are many folks that have issues even without the spacers.

Also, that booster will clear the valve covers. It is the cobra booster.
