Oil coolers Empty Oil coolers

Looking for some input on who makes a good adaptor to run an oil cooler. Is a sandwich style between the block and filter the best way to go? And who makes a quality piece? Also what is the best temp to keep the oil at? Thanks in advance for any help Cool

If you have the room, a Ford oil filter adapter off a factory 460 stuffed in a E350 has the ports for the oil cooler and you can adjust the angle of the oil filter to suit your needs also. Smile

In a Drag Application,I see no need/advantage for a cooler. jmo

We do alot of drag racing, but also this rig will see some use where we will push it fairly hard for a 10 or 15 min run. Just want to be able to control the engine temp. I already fabbed up a 10 quart aluminum oil pan, but also feel that a dedicated cooler with a fan will help keep things in line. Just want to find out what is the best way to put oil to and from the cooler.

with the extra 3 to 4 quarts of fluid to absorb and transfer the heat into the the new bigger aluminium (heat sink) pan, which helps get rid of the heat a cooler is definitely NOT needed IMHO

I'd still like to know the answer to the OP question: Also what is the best temp to keep the oil at?

Now I could care less if you think anyone needs an oil cooler or not.
I could care less about in this application or in that application.
I could care less about if there's 5 qt's of oil in your engine or 20 qt's. Mad
(sorry for the rant)

I'd just like for the question to be answered.

In my (insert application), I'm running (insert oil type and weight) and I like for my engine oil temperature to run (insert temperature range).

My concern comes from the fact that our other rig which had a 460 in it also would make 5 to 6 runs when we first would take it out before the water temp would get to 200 degrees. I would make shure the water temp was at 160 to 170 before we started to run it. After that initial run we would let it set for a 30 to 45 min to let it cool, but only get 2 or possibly 3 runs before the motor was a 200 plus. So your right once oil is hot it stays hot! But has no good way to dissapate heat, the reason for the idea of a cooler. I am shure the new, larger aluminum pan will help, but still believe that the cooler will be good insurance that I am not watching everyone else run while I have to sit.

We always have used Valvoline 20-50 racing oil with good luck. Is there something else that a guy should look at?

Has anyone ever had experience with "Hamburgs" remote oil filter setups. I was looking at the screw on style with the single remote mount, and plumbing the cooler in line with those. We already have a Derale cooler with a built in fan and 8-an lines.

Pro Stock style stuff...... 100-120 degrees...... Typical Drag Car...... 150-200 Degree...... Circle Jerk stuff I've seen 280+ is not out of the ordinary.

Biggest thing is proper control and not allowing the oil to airate..... more oil doesn't mean better or less temp.

Try Synthetic oil, Red Line, Royal Purple, Etc.

Ideally you would like the oil temp to mirror the water temp, around 180 - 200 degrees. Oil run too hot can add to your detonation worries in some applications. I use a 2 qt cooler in a supercharged application , and use the spacer between the block and filter. Mine is street driven on gas, so heat is my enemy, I have to watch the temps closely.
