Hi guys, working on my engine and have a question regarding the oil gallery plugs. This mostly concerns the plug for the lifter gallery on the passenger side of the block. Do I need a special plug here? It appears the threads go pretty far in and I wasn't sure if this is to enable you to screw the plug in farther to restrict oil flow in some form? It is a 460 block out of a 79 truck. Also, are there any other oiling modifications I should do? I already have the drainback holes chamfered, didn't know if I there was and oil restrictor kit that I should look into? Thanks so much for all the help, I want to do this right the first time Very Happy

Also, I know I have seen it before, but does anyone have a picture that shows the routing of the oil gallerys?

IF they haven't been re-tapped, the front gallery threads are Ford "J" thread which is real close to 3/8 - NPS but, NOT the same.
Big blocks and Cleveland engines have these "J" plugs in the front.

plug has a pointed end . make sure it doesnt go in to far to restrick the flow

Rear of block plugs on either side of the cam are 3/8 NPT. The front of the block plugs on either side of the cam are almost always Ford J-thread.

The front (only) lifter gallery plugs are the pointy-nosed tapered-tip plugs, as delivered from the factory. The critical one is the passenger side lifter gallery, as noted by the arrow:

Below shows a picture of the two possible NPT plugs. The one to use in the front of the block on the passenger side lifter gallery is the plug on the left:

The reason for the use of this plug is because oil travels upward to this point via the main oil gallery and then turns rearward, sending oil down the passenger side lifter gallery:

Once tightened into the block, it should be flush with the machined surface of the front of the block and not deeper than that.

Thanks Paul, and everyone else, that answers my question perfectly. Those are the plugs that I have for the block so looks like I am good there.
