I will be dropping a 429 into my 72 Gran Torino and was wondering what tranny i should use. I have the c4 thats still in the car, an FMX from a Ranchero, and the c6 that is behind the 429 right now. If i go with the FMX or c4 i have to mod the internals as well as get a bell housing whereas the c6 needs to have the tail shaft and output shaft changed to fit the car. The tranny selection and work put into it seems to be the linch pin of the project so any help i can get would be great! afro

The C-6 would be the cheapest and the strongest. With just a heavy duty rebuild, they will take an amazing amount of power. The mods to the C4 will go way over the cost of the C6 and the FMX has no aftermarket support, and is not very strong.

If its already set up for the c4 I'd stick with that, buy a few key parts and it will live a long time, as long as the motor is not super wild lol.

If you have no current tranny to work and have to start from scratch the c6 will be the better bet.

Ill be going with the c6. The car was origionally equiped with a c4 but the cost to bring it up to par with the c6 is quite prohibitive compared to going with the c6. The $360ish cost of a bell housing for the c4 is the biggest turn off compared to just finding a donor case of a c6 to get the correct tail housing and output shaft that i need. I dont think ill break the 500hp mark with my 429 build but these motors seem to make alot of power even when theyre just thrown together so you never know Very Happy

You won't need a case, just a tailshaft and extension housing..... Do you have the Lincoln tailshaft and housing on the trans now?

ITll be coming out of a 72 thunderbird and i was told that the tranny will have a 17" tail with a sideways mount but to get it to work with my 72 Torino ill need the 13" tail with a more traditional mount. Itll become painfuly clear what i need once it comes out of the 'bird though. Evil or Very Mad

There may be some hope for you, I have run a 69 T-bird C6 and it fit just great in my Torino. Turns out it was the exact same length as another C6 I am running now which came out of a pickup truck.

As long as you have a 31 spline output shaft and a normal trans mount back there I would run that thing regardless of tailhousing length.
