Destroyed Engine in Lighting Empty Destroyed Engine in Lighting

Post  Tennessee Bullitt March 25th 2011, 8:18 pm

Well going to town today I went to get on it a little and pop. Evil or Very Mad Pulled in Mcdonalds and went to look and I have a hole on each side of the engine block at the rear of the motor. It's weird because I drove 1 1/2 miles before I shut it off. I guess I am going to start getting ideas for a 460 build to replace this one. Twisted Evil

Just over 86,000. It's gen 2 just like your Blake. Even the same color Very Happy I found out this morning it had to do with the rod bolts. The holes in the block are perfect round size of rod bolts. I am still learning on this one.

Well atleast my drum of fuel came in so I still have the mustang to get around town. cheers

Blake what do you think of putting a 460 in place of this 5.4?

I think you will be hard pressed to get the same power from the 460 and still get the fuel mileage of the blown 5.4 , but the big block would be fun and cool in that truck, I think the handling may suffer also.

Didn't Lem do a 502 motor that had awsome results? I am looking at cost... seems the 460 would be cheaper to build than a 5.4. I am still looking at all options.

Has anyone came up with a kit to put a 460 in a 97-03 F-150 ?

I am now seeing those trucks showing up at reasonable prices.

I got a look under the hood of a '97 F-150 last weekend. Looks like a 460 would clear the firewall o.k.

My brother has a '97 x-cab shortbed 2wd F-150.
It has a 4.6 with engine problems and needs work.
He likes 460 trucks as well, so maybe I can convince him to swap in a 400 hp pump gas 460. Very Happy

Hey Alan a 460 will give more room than you think. I have more room in my 03 mustang with motor I built than the previous 4.6's. To give you an idea I am running 2 1/8 headders on a factory 93 k-member with the ford racing swap motor mounts and can move my hands past the frame rails to the k-member easier than I could than the 4.6 with a tublar k-member and 1 3/4 headders. Bolting a 460 in a newer truck will definatly have lots more room because they was built to accept a 5.4 even if it had a 4.6. If that makes any sense.

I agree changing spark plugs especially on a lightning is a major pain. I already have someone calling me wanting to buy my top end off the lightning so we will see.

The 460 wouldn't give any handeling problems! The weight of the 5.4 with the blower is equel to a cast iron headed 460 and you wouldn't lose much if any fuel mileage . The 5.4 has to run 93 and only about 14 miles to the gallon! As a comparisson a 95 1 ton 4 door dually with 4:10 gears gets 12mpg. So in a 2500 lbs lighter vehicle with 3:55 rear gears and a overdrive trans should be the same as the 5.4 or a little better fuel and performance wise.

Put a fast fuel system on it a set eldelbrock performer heads 9.0:1 compression custom grind Hyd roller with 112 or 114 lobe seperation 24 lb injectors and a AODE trans and let her rip! just My Thoughts on it!
