inital timing setting Empty inital timing setting

How much timing should be set when starting a motor? Would the camshaft have a big part when adjusting so it can run and break in a flat tappet without sputtering or have trouble running? Curious as to what you guys do.

Somewhere around 28* to 30* ought to be good for initial start-up.
