Ford racing valve covers Empty Ford racing valve covers

Hi All,
Has anyone had clearance issue with there valve springs hitting the side of the covers? My number 5 exhaust valve spring is rubbing the inside where the indentation groove where it bolts to the head. Is it normal to have to clearance these valve covers? I think I just need to hog the holes out just a touch and push the valve cover down a little so it clears. Am I on the right track?

P51 or SCJ heads?

If so, you'll need to grind the inside of both covers to get that spring to clear. Check clearance through a full rotation cycle of the spring. I had to take off more than I thought I would.

Most just need a slight barbering the inside of that bolt column and then twist the cover on installation, counterclockwise as much as you can with the bolts loosely installed.

A 1.630" O.D. spring needs more. Personally, I use a "beehive" spring on the exhaust side with a SCJ head whenever it warrants.

My P-51 heads with 1.65 valves rubbed. I had to "massage" them a bit and they work fine now.
