resistor?

I don't have a wire harness is there some sort of resistor I can use for head lights and I wasn't sure about running the msd ready to run distributor right to the battery now that I have a alternator

I have a ready to run msd and it has to go to battery - 12v or it won't work.

But it needs to be run through a switch. If I'm understanding it, your wanting to go straight to batt?

I have msd hooked to battery with a switch I was just worried about sending to much power I've had it hooked up to battery for a while but never had a alternator as soon as I hooked up the self regulating Chevy alternator I blow the head lights so I unhooked everything but the distributor so I trying to find out if there's anything I can hook my electric fan and headlights to:?:

Sounds like the self regulating deal....ain't.

X2 sounds like it not regulating

Take alt off and carry it to a local auto parts and have them check it they can tell you if it putting out to much.

No you should not the heads should be 12vt I have hooked a wire straight to the battery to the head lights on my 69 to get home one night when the dimmer switch went out. Never hurt a thing

A fully charged 12V battery in good condition may show 13.2V or so. An electrical system with a good working alternator may see 14.2V at times, NEITHER of which is enough to blow a headlamp. Have you check this thing with a voltmeter? If it's hot enough to blow the lights, it'll cook other items too, including your battery.

OK I'll take the alternator in and get it checked. Now I'm not saying that I doubt your word but the cat mechanic at work was saying about the old Clark skidder that has the same alternator that it would never work hooked to the battery with a in line fuse needs to run through a voltage regulator becouse it was having the same problem might get a couple hours out of a fuse

Are you sure it has an internal voltage regulator? It sounds like the system either has a failed regulator or none at all. The test at the parts store should tell the tale.

That's very possible. I asked for a internal regulated alternator and it had a v belt on it so I assumed it was but you never know what you're going to get at Canadian tire

Headlights will stand 16v also. your regulator ain't regulating for some reason.

I think your right about not having a regulator I'm going to take it in on Monday I think I have to be more vehicle specific can you help me out with what years of chev truck I should order a alternator for

If you have a Advance Auto Parts they have a 1 wire alt less than a $100 us money. I don't remember the part number been a few years since I bought mine. I try to remember to look tomorrow to see if I can find the part number for it.

Right on let me know there's no advanced auto but we have a Napa and crappie tire it's a couple hours to the after market deeler and I don't have a credit card

With "no wiring harness" the resistor you could add would be a voltage regulator, available in most pre-74 vehicles in the bone yards, or over the parts counters. I agree with Mav, no regulator (which will cook the battery too)...The "V-belt" will not help you identify the internally regulated alt, as all previous Non regulated versions used the "v-belt".My GM memories are mostly behind me but I believe the external stuff started with the introduction of the HEI ignition in the mid to late 70's. The 3-wire(SI) can be looped, meaning if you add an external voltage regulator with some weather-pack type connectors you can bypass the external voltage regulator at will with a few minor connections, and run the external or internal setup when required rather easily.

So this alternator is not internally regulated if someone could give me a year and make that I could order one for I'd appreciate it I'd rather just get a new one than wire in a external regulator thanx

Just a std 55-63 basic, internally regulated available at NAPA

I ended up getting the chrome alternator everything worked good for the first run new tires hooked up good 38.5 11.5 15 boggers broke 2 u joints at hi speed I think the back drive shaft is a little steep but in the mud they all held up I heard that there is a kit to flip the 9 inch rear end was going to look into that thanks for all the help with everything I was the king of cripple creak this year
