Blower/intakes/adapters and heads Empty Blower/intakes/adapters and heads

Post  John Myrick April 13th 2015, 8:11 pm

As the title says. I'm thinking about going with a 10 or 12-71roots blower. Which would be the best combo ?
SCJB heads( already have ), BDS, Hampton or Blue Thunder manifold
P51 heads, BDS, Hampton or Blue Thunder manifold
A460 heads, Price adapters, BDS, Hampton or Blue Thunder manifold

I have no idea how the SCJB's would work on a boosted application and no idea how much the adapters take away from using the A460 heads.
But I will not have a custom manifold made as I'm not out to break any speed records.

This is for a 557 through a 598 as I'm not sure what size it will be

Any and all advice is appreciated

Thanks

And yes I've read all the posts in this section and a lot in other forums

The SCJ heads will work fine if you have them,  I'd keep it displacement down to around 540" or under so you can get the boost to it efficiently and feed the beast.

A 12 should be the ticket too.

The a460 stuff would be bad ass but IMO the adaptors are not the best, if you go that route I'd spend the $$ on a fabricated manifold and a 14

You could weld a plate to a a460 tunnel ram if you don't mine the height.

Dave, I'm already at 557
So just hog out the scj's and let it eat with a 12 or 10-71

Bigger is better helps keep the heat down and makes making booster easier.

May want to look into a pro charger too.

A460 heads are the best for blown alcohol, with titanium valves and WW shaft rockers

I run them with a blue thunder manifold and the Price adapter plates on my engines.

BTW how about the A441 heads from C and C motorsports???

This will be driven on the street also if I decide to go a blower route. I will have 2 tunes for it
1) street use - pump gas - under driven
2) race use - race gas - even driven or over driven

If that is even possible to do with the same carbs

Yes its possible, you'll just need to do some tuning on the dyno and gather the data for both fuels and the required tunes.

You can easily make 1000 hp with a big blower, aluminum CJ heads, and just a flat tappet camshaft.  Then pulleys essentially can make the difference for race or street.  If you already have a 557 then you are going to need to find pistons that will lower compression ratio adequately for using pump gas, and that's going to be a custom piston with quite a big dish...it might be easier to get there will less stroke + dished piston than by piston alone. Go with the Blue Thunder blower intake.

I'd say step one would be to decide which block you are going to use. If you are staying with a stock block, then I'd probably stay with the SCJ heads. Ported SCJ heads generally flow around 245-250 cfm on the exhaust without a test pipe. So focus on porting and flowing the exhaust to be the best they can be, because the Ford style exhaust port is not conducive to good exhaust flow in a blown engine. Of course with this combo run the Blue Thunder blower manifold.

If you are going with an aftermarket block with 18 head bolts, then let's take advantage of that opportunity to have a better clamping force and use the TFS A-460 18 bolt heads. Additionally. the exhaust ports are much better with the TFS A-460 heads, usually flowing around 320- 325 cfm when ported, without a test pipe. Then use the Price Motorsports adapters and the Blue Thunder blower manifold.

Lem and I rebuilt a blown Ford jet boat engine years ago, and switched it from the OEM style heads to TFS A-460 heads. Because both the intake and exhaust flow was much better, it made well over a 150 more Hp, and actually had less manifold boost pressure with the same pulley combo on the dyno.

Hope this helps,
Charlie

Charlie, thanks for the information on the exhaust side. I already have the A460 block. With the amount of boost I will be running most of the time I won't need the 18 bolt heads as I will mostly be on the street with pump gas. I might take it to the track 5 times year, so I have a cost to performance ratio I will be considering. The cometic head gaskets seem to seal the heads pretty darn good with just 10 bolts on nitrous applications.
I am about 100% sure I will be going with a roots 12-71 due to the fact up here in maryland, if I get pulled over by the police I will be subject to a 5 point moving violation and untold fines and with that I will lose my company vehicle which I would not be happy about........so a blower is in the cards.

Thanks to all for the advice and more is welcome of course
