Supposedly real strong even in stock form, lots of them around, and can change to a 2spd with a valve body swap, there are alot of gear ratio options as well.

Is this a reliable transmission? Empty T-400

Post  butterbean October 15th 2014, 1:14 am

I done the T-400 swap and I put it all on a pallet to be weighed but first I removed my C-6 and put it on a pallet as well with the converter, flywheel, yoke, block plate, trans mount, shift lever and bracket and the cooler lines and it weighed 195lbs and the T-400 with all the same stuff weighed 175lbs!!! and I like all the options you have with the T-400 now too.

If you are buying a 3 spd trans why not have Frank build you a C6 ? What is 20 lbs different ! By the time Frank gets done with it I bet there won't be 10 lbs different .

One big reason is the popularity and ease of finding parts.

I knew you would say that, was shocked you hadn't said it in your first post.

I am gonna run a brake that will allow me to leave in first or second so we can settle this 2 vs. 3 speed argument. Wink

Not sure how much of an argument there is.....

Some combos need 2, and some 3 speeds. I see an awful lot of PRO NITROUS cars with 3 speed 400's. But a million MFer's can't be wrong with a glide. Hmmm

Well, educate me because I was just going off what the manufacturer told me about their new valve body.

I called him and he explained what he meant. A little confusing at first but I think I understand.

Trying to figure out what to run is a pita. I took two 400's to my trans shop and out of two supposed good transmissions all I got out them was two good cases and one output shaft.

Gonna tell you something that you already know.....

Stop messing around with used parts that may be questionable. Either find something from a reputable racer that is known-good or run down to Elburn and buy a mid-level Glide from Proformance. A glide will be fine in that car. Why complicate the situation with turbo glides, and 3 speed 400's and whatever. Again, a million MF'rs run glides and they run well! Don't reinvent the wheel here.

And setting up a small tired NOS car like YOURS would be better with a glide IMO. Turbo glides are nice pieces but at your level I'd say forget it.

10-4 Tony and Jon, I traded some junk i couldn't use for some more junk i couldn't use so I am not out anything on the turbo 400's other than my time so I will just write them off.

Glide it is no more f'ing around.

You'll be glad, Jim....Keep it simple, reliable, fixable. The 'glide will make launch tuning easier, too. EVERYBODY has parts, the car loses weight...yada yada.... Just pick the right rear gear and race it. Most cars I've seen make the switch to a 'glide (as long as they weren't porkers) went quicker AND more consistant. Yours will fall into that category.

Nothing wrong with going off the beaten path & trying some new combo/reinventing the wheel if you have the time/money/effort to throw at it, and you don't mind the possible added aggravation & stomach acid that doing so might cause.

To be real honest I am charting new waters for me. Despite running the engine in my Ranger I really didn't learn much from that deal other than that you can't put an 8 second engine in a 10 second vehicle and expect it to work, by the time I started getting it to go down the track I had a catastrophic transmission/converter failure. I had the engine "freshened" to make sure the failure did not damage the engine, and while it was apart I had the intake worked and new carbs... . I also decided to build a stock suspension Mustang with a drag radial so other than the dyno info I have absolutely no useful info other than others advice.

I refuse to put a 7531 or Davis box on the car and the car is geared for specific mph@rpm so the SLR would be extreme with a 3 speed unless I have custom (other than stock) ratios built into the trans so I feel the only real option for me at this time is gonna be a glide.

Once I get some learning under my belt then I can start experimenting. I appreciate the advice though.
