A460 Exhaust port spacing Empty A460 Exhaust port spacing

Post  56Tbird April 19th 2012, 3:35 pm

I made my zoomies off my A460 Ford Motorsport heads....Well...today i was trying to bolt them up to the TFS A460 heads on the engine in my car...And guess what?? The TFS heads from end bolt to end bolt are 1/8" narrower than the Ford Motorsports. You probably wouldn't notice it on a set of headers with slip in tubes, but I welded straps on these zoomies for support. I'm wondering if it would be better to cut them apart and reweld the straps or to ream the flanges out?? This stuff is really fun!!! Been remounting everything to get this engine in .. scratch

Reaming the flanges out would probly be easier as long as the port alignment is good, and you have enough flange.

You should have called Uncle Charlie, because you haven't been paying attention Exclamation Anyway, I've posted it a dozen times if I've posted it once,,,,,, but the old Ford Motorsports A-460 heads and the old TFS A-460 heads with the "block" cast lettering,,, had the Chevy bolt pattern on Ford bore centers of 4.900".

The current TFS A-460 heads, with the ends milled flat and smooth, with engraved lettering, have the Chevy exhaust bolt pattern AND is on Chevy bore centers of 4.840". Therefore, it can take a one piece Chevy header gasket. That's your difference and is the cause of your problem.

I'm glad to know the difference now..It ain't no big deal either way. May just ream the flanges, I've got Jon Thee flanges and have plenty of room on them ,it won't take much to clear them . I can move them over enough with a screwdriver to line them ,but don't like that much pressure on the bolts being that they are in aluminum.. Wink

Dan I would rem the holes alittle it might be tuff the 1st time but after you heat them up a few times they should not have that much pressure on the bolts as the heat will let the metal expand alittle.I had the same thing happen on the header I put on my 69 F100 after I had to make some mods to them after they was run awhile I don't have to pry on them to get them on.

I think I'd rather just go ahead and ream them to fit these heads too. That way if I have to put the other engine in ,they'll fit Exclamation

Dan,

I try to use header studs and then serrated flange nuts on my stuff. That way you don't have to worry about crossthreading a bolt. I think I have a case of those header studs on the shelf and they are grade 8 with the small internal hex head. Switched to studs when I got tired of heli-coiling the header bolt holes in the heads.

Thats what SHE said Embarassed Razz

Dan,I also like the stud deal on mine. And it also makes the headers alot easier to install. If you need a new set of studs let me know and I will send you some. Of course you know mine will be VERY expensive to YOU. Laughing

header tubes are larger than exhaust port ,, no big deal . now if sloting the bolt holes moves the tube to cover the exhaust port .. then
