Cam sensor for 460

If you are happy with it great. As for not dignifying that it is a flawed system with an answer, besides your reply coming across as a "holier than thou" attitude I's say it can stand on its own merits, or lack there of.... Think we are done here.

To use the explorer setup he must be running either individual coils or the DIS coil pack like the Mustangs went to.

David W. I'm still running your timing pointer. I think this will be easier, especially servicing and inspection with the sensor mounted out in front as yours is. Are you selling that sweet little mount and what sensor is it? As noted I currently have an external oil pump so no shaft presently so no fail safe. I will be going to eight IGN-1a coils with the MS3X so we can do individual cylinder trims.

That sensor mount was just something we built at the last minute to get to the dyno. I don't know if the one bolt is going to be enough to keep it in position. If you need one, I could build one for you, but I would need to know your dimensions. Motorplate to front of cam pulley and what thread for the sensor. We use 3/8-24 for our sensors.

The cam sensor is for the fuel injection system (more or less as backup).
I have a '93 Thunderbird SC (a oem supercharged 3.8 V6) It uses shutter type crank trigger (changed in '94 to 36-1) and a cam sensor with DIS and 6-pak waste spark coil.
I am in the process of building a 460 with the intention of using a 3.8l SC cam sensor, 36-1 crank trigger from a '94 SC v6 and EDIS 8 distributerless ignition system from a Crown Vic.
If the cam sensor shaft is too long, but the sensor height is good, cut the shaft, sleeve it and weld it. Just make sure that you use the correct cam drive gear (material i.e. steel/bronze) for your type of camshaft. I used a MSD drive gear for a standard cam as my engine is a 'mid 70's carb unit.
Since my engine will be strictly street/hi-way use, I am looking to use an Edelbrock Performer 460 2 plane intake. Problem is, getting it modified for injectors. I will be using a 5.0l V8 EEC-IV ECU with a Moates Quarter Horse piggyback chip.
This may be the hardest part but the most expensive will be a set of aluminum heads to get rid of weight!
I have a local machinst that has made parts for me for this project and the T56 swap for the 3.8l SC.
I have the adapter for the DIS and the trigger wheel mount for him to do this summer.

Edelbrock makes the torquer with injector bungs already machined now. I know it is a single plane but I wonder if the improved torque(throttle response) from the efi would counteract the slight loss in torque from the dual plane to single plane conversion.

Well, this took longer than I expected but now its done and running. At the end of the day I fabricated a little mount for a Cherry VR Sensor to connect to the Mega Squirt MS3X box I bought last year at this time. The Cherry sensors have proven reliable for use as carnk trigger sensors on a 36-1 Ford EDIS type wheel wheel, speed sensors reading the back of the studs behind the axle flange or hub and off the cam gear of the belt drive.

The bracket is just some 5/8' square tube, with a thick washer weled on for the nut to seat on, attached to a piece of 1x2 tube for the sensor. It adjusts for depth (air gap) by changing the included nuts on the threaded body of the sensor. The tab on the cam gear is a peice of scrap 1x1x.25 angle iron. I'm a little worried about cam/gear balance and will add a bigger nut 180* opposite the tab to compensate.

Below I've posted some picture of the cam sensor mount and tab, and the wheel sensors. I am still using a GM LS1 sensor for the crank trigger, but I'll build a new mount for a Cherry sensor likely after Drag Week. That way I have a single sensor type as back up for any failure. On refecltion I think the style with a built in connector might be better for crank and cam while I'll stick with the exteneded lead version for the wheel sensors. Then I'd need two spares. We'll see.

Its a dual Accufab TB on a tunnel ram set-up usiing RCI 96 lb/hr injectors, Pantera EFI wasted spark coils.

Also Lem posted a video in the Engine Tech/ 360 or 340 TFS thread. I don't know who all those old guys are.

I have heard that you can adapt a 3.8L V6 cam sensor, hopefully that won't be too tall. It also uses a 5/16" oil pump drive. The late 3.0L V6 uses a very low profile one at least the Taurus engines do but I have no idea whether it could be made to work or not. Does your system need just a pules to reference #1, or like most of the older Ford ones 180° shutter. If it is a simple pulse maybe you could do something like GM did on the 3800 engines and the Ford mod motors. A raised area on the face of the cam gear to give the pulse, or a disk with a raised tooth in front of the cam gear where the fuel pump eccentric would mount.

The home made cam sensor using a 3.8 and 5.0 sensor is on page 2. That PMS one is nice, just $$$, although not as bad as the AEM one!
