What do you guys use to lube the cylinder walls and rings when installing? I have Akerly and Childs rings and they are saying to use their lube and not engine oil.
Just curious as I don’t want to buy a bottle when I probably won’t use much of it for one engine.

A good name brand of motor oil is what I use. Nothing exotic around here.

Thanks. I have used brake cleen to clean the cylinders and good oil on the walls and skirts when assembling in the past, so I guess that's what I'll keep using.

Their AO-108 (or whatever they call it these days) works. Our theory when we all worked C&A was that it's 10wgt hydraulic jack oil....but the Three Musketeers would never admit it.

Almost anything else works too.

50 years ago when I worked after school in a production engine rebuilding shop, we used a 50/50 mixture of ATF and 90-140 gear oil.
Probably just habit but, because it worked well and no issues arose, I still use that mixture today.

I've used just about everything with good results.
Cool40 says WD40 and I've used that when I needed to send it down the track without testing. I think that WD40 breaks in immediately so why not.

Kendal 30wt and STP oil treatment 50/50 is the slickest that I've ever used and will continue to use it for a normal break in time period. Also if the engine is going together and will not be fired for some time it will hang lubed up.
