D8AE 6684-AA Oil Cooler Adapter Empty D8AE 6684-AA Oil Cooler Adapter

Quick question for all you BBF experts.  I found a D8AE 6684-AA oil cooler adapter, which I told was off a heavy duty 429.  Can I put this onto my passenger car block?  I know on FE motors there can be a difference between heavy duty and car blocks.  Furthermore, has anyone ever used this part before?  I searched the forums and didn't see anything about it.  Thanks, Michael

Should work fine on any 429-460 as long as you have the hollow bolt, threaded block insert and the oil cooler.

If you dont have the cooler you could block off the adapter ports with 1/2" pipe plugs and just use it as a right angle filter adapter.

Thank you. You also answered another question I had in my head as I was wondered what would happen if the in-out ports were plugged. I am surprised more people don't use these oil cooler adapters rather than the more expensive SCJ ones floating around on Ebay.

I'm using a D1ZE-6881 adapter which originally came on Boss 351's or a service replacement for Boss 429's. They have the feature of an

anti-drain back checkball, spring setup so the engine oil cant drain out from the cooler.

Also on another note I have a D5TE-6884 adapter to and although it does physically bolt up to the engine the angle is wrong so I cant get any type

of filter to spin on without it contacting the block. One day I'll have to find out exactly what the application is for.

MFriday,all Ford oil cooler adapters for post 64 and pre-modular engines with the exception of those meant for FE's(and possibly the big SD truck engines) will fit other ford v-8's and inline sixes of the same era with the appropriate hollow bolt and block insert,now just because it will fit the engine doesn't necessarily mean it will fit the chassis its installed in there were several different configurations for cars, pickups, econoline vans(and motorhomes) and medium duty trucks,the D8AE prefix for an oil cooler adapter is unfamiliar to me since it implies use for a full size car look closer and see if its not a D8UE which was used in econoline vans and pickups.That doesn't mean it won't fit in what your trying to put it in,it just means you will have try and see. Also since there is nothing to index it on the block it can be installed in any direction provided there is clearance for the filter once installed.

Thanks rmk57 and 427John. This is really good information. It is especially useful to know the small block, 351c, and 385-series oil cooler adapters can "in theory" be used on each other. I saw one for a 80's 5.0L and wondered if it would fit a 351C, and now that sounds like it might work, given other fitments issues don't arise.

On the one I just bought, the D8AE is clearly visible, and I hope to use it on my 78 Bronco as a way to get an oil cooler onto it as a bit of insurance.

The D1ZE and the D8AE are very similar. Ford resurrected the D1ZE design to use on the heavy truck 370.

The "C8AE-6884-AA" listed there is some enterprising flip-meisters re-stamp of a D8AE adapter.

Based on the webpage above, the D8UE is just an adapter and not an oil cooler. It looks like the D8AE is a D8UE but the in-out ports are drilled out.

The D8UE looks to be slightly smaller or more compact than the D1ZE or C9AE adapter. It looks more like the D5TE I have on the shelf.

My D5TE adapter wasn't drilled out either, but I did drill and tap it. I guess if you ordered a heavy duty towing package you got the whole

cooler assembly.

I agree that C8AE adapter in the link is either re-stamped or a new casting.

It will bolt right up and move oil normally if that’s what you’re asking. And it should work just fine in a similarly suited application.

If you intend to use it in a very high horsepower/high rpm application then you might want to take a closer look and prep it for such use (passage size & shape, etc).
