521 and cooling? Empty 521 and cooling?

Post  6jeff6 September 13th 2015, 11:48 pm

I have a 521 that is stuffed in a 97 cobra. Now it has a custom radiator with fan mounted in front sucking air thru it. The radiator cap is actually right above where the thermostat and hose is. If I fill it up full after it warms up it constantly pisses fluid out of over flow which is a custom blue canister with a small hole on the top of it. Now do I need to allow room for expansion or do I have an issue? Any help would be great because track will go nuts if I spill antifreeze like that.

Leave expansion room. And what are your engine temps when it's pushing out coolant?

One more question....Why are you using anti-freeze at the track?

They actually hooked temp gauge to stocker so it's absolutely worthless . I am gone for the week now but will be back home on Friday night and will report back with what thermostat is. Now on my kenne belled 4.6 I had we drilled holes around the edge of thermostat has anyone done that?
And leave room for expansion means run motor up to temp and just let it piss out what it doesn't want? Like a another member pmd me ?

Thanks guys sorry I can't give the info til end of week but have to work to play

I have done the 1/8" hole bit. Don't get carried away just start with one or two holes, it dropped a 195 stat down to a 160 for me.

When you're sure you have the right cap in good condition, I'd say just don't fill it to the top.  I guess the better question would be "How much does it push out before it stops?"  I'd start by leaving out about 1 1/2 times that amount on the initial cold fill.  My racecar does the same thing if I overfill a bit, so I just leave some space in there...and then I toss in a bottle of WaterWetter.

Btw, with a small, Scirrocco style radiator, I stage the my 514 at 160*. After the pass, I drive back to the pits and typically shut it down somewhere between 180* and 190*. It rarely puts any water in the catch can. And this is with a completely closed off front end. (No fresh air through the radiator.)

K thanks guys. I'll drill holes this weekend and just leave it where it's at now. The problem with the cap (where I can fill it) is the location I have no idea how much is in there . So I should drain and fill with pure water and put in a bottle of water wetter? I have a big radiator so I'm surprised it's an issue

The cap itself is some type of race one I think. It had a flip down piece to lock it in that I can remember

I have no expansion tank and a very small radiator capacity, so I used one of those fill necks that clamps into the middle of the upper radiator hose.  That way I can position it at the highest point in the system and basically use the upper hose as the expansion tank.  If I see water in the hose when the pump is turned off, I know it's overfilled.

In that pic (if it's not an optical illusion) it kinda looks to me like the radiator cap/puke hose housing on the manifold is sitting lower than the top of the radiator. If so that could be the problem since that would mean the cap/puke hose wouldn't be sitting at the highest point in the system.

But if my memory is correct it's the highest point where it comes out by cap.

I'm with Dave. The HOSE appears to be lower than the top of the radiator. If you're going to use the hose as an expansion tank, the hose (not just the cap) must be higher than the top of the radiator and the fill neck will have to be slightly higher still. In other words, you must be able to fill the radiator without filling the hose. Airspace is what's required here.

I will use a level and check but I'm guessing I would need to somehow get a different/taller neck to work that does exactly what you're asking?
Thanks I would have never ever looked at that

You can buy a filler neck which simply clamps into the middle of the top hose. You can position it anywhere you like.

Drill a 1/8 hole in the Stat and put a 12lb cap on it see what that does for it....

We have 3 1/8 holes in the small block car with a 160 Stat with a electric water pump now it gets drove on the street alot and haven't had any problems yet... we also went to a 8lb cap
