New motor won't turn over Empty New motor won't turn over

Post  sg86coupe July 25th 2015, 2:56 pm

Tring to put converter bolts in but motor will only turn a small amount then stop. I can turn it backwards easly but only a small amount. Converter turns freely. This is my new motor, I don't want to think it could be a problem inside. Any ideals?

I didn't put it together, I paid a engine builder to assemble it. I don't remember trying to turn it over.

It 's pretty hard to assemble an engine if you can't turn it over. I'm guessing the flywheel bolts are a little too long.

X2 had that to happen on my 460 when I built it the first time

Well I pulled the transmission back out, took the fly wheel off and motor still won't turn over. I was hoping fly wheel bolts were hitting. Any ideals before I pull motor back out ?

No really good ideas. If none of the front accessories are locked up, which is not likely, pull the fuel pump, distributor, and valve covers (for visual inspection) and see what happens. It's not sounding very good at this point, but don't give up hope.

Make sure if it has adjustable rocker arms they are not to tight and making a valve hit the piston

It could be something as simple as a spark plug ground electrode to something really serious

Almost impossible to diagnose without feeling it or seeing it.

The crank will only turn a very little bit mabey 1/8 turn. It turns easly the amount it turns. Randy I know it's hard to figger it out without being here, I guess I'm close to panicing so I appreciate any suggestions from everyone. This is my new motor A-head 572, it's in proven builds under A-head 547. Thanks again for any help.

OK, so it's a full race engine. What have you done besides pull the trans and flexplate?

Rockers are loose Valves have not been set. So I'm not sure what to check next.

I heard of the crank hitting a Kaase oil pump before.

So the engine builder did not set the valve lash? Just trying to piece together the puzzle. The Kasse oil pump hitting the crank makes a lot of sense if it was the last thing installed.

Valves were not set I picked up the motor in december and did not want pressure on valve springs over winter. I do not know the order of how it was assembled, so I don't know if the pump and pan were last.

To see if that was the screw-up ... take out all the pushrods and see if the issue goes away.

At least you might locate the area of the problem.

If it is the Kasse pump what is the fix, different brand pump or grinding the Kasse pump? I'll go pull the push rods and see if that helps.

If I remember correctly it was clearanced with a grinder. I don't remember where I saw it, may have been here or the old 385 websight but I remember pictures.
