Super stock

Anyone have any experience with super stock??
Does it take mega $$ compared to fast brackets to be competitive?
I know there are many different classes, weight breaks, etc; just kickin' something around. 

Pricey... My favorite classes.... The only SS guy I knew passed away two years ago.. He was interesting to talk to.

I figured it would be pricey depending on which class entered. Reason I'm curious is my youngest posted on YB about DOOE-R heads & stirred the pot. Apparently the 385 ford is not really represented too well in this class. I've got a 71 F code manual trans project car in my back garage  and would like to upgrade my '70 from iron heads to maybe a set of C's. Maybe put the factory SCJ's in the 71'.

Make that a double .... X2! Also the CJ/SCJ doesn't have a good home in NHRA S/S as do later, low compression, low horsepower versions.

i saw that thread he deffinitly stirred the pot on that topic

Anytime you go SS racing it will be pricey. It takes a lot of Know how,tricks,dynoing,tuning,and the right car and weight brake,etc. SS racers are savey racers and the competitive ones are at the top of their game.Probably 10 times more expensive to go SS racing or more than Bracket racing imo.

Going strictly from memory; Colin's "05 Mustang weighed around 3,400 pounds with a 3 speed automatic and just 440 cubic inches with D0OE-R heads using "stock OEM volume runners and valve sizes" and only a 780cfm carb went almost 9 flat in the 1/4 mile.

EDIT:  That was over some 4 years ago.

Just to give you an idea ... a low drag, 3 speed Pro Trans for Super Stock costs well over $6,000.00.  Most leading SS guys have 2 of them with a different 1st gear ratio for different tracks.

Being top dog in SS would require an amount of dedication that would leave me broke and divorced. I'm not gonna try it....

A friend of mine runs a 67 Fairlane in SS/D and E.  427 fe, 2X4, stick.  Car is super cool, but like most SS and really true of those in the upper classes....not for the faint of wallet.

If the car isn't too cut up, I would look into Stock Eliminator.  It is a very good combination, that Vic Gulimino has run in the 10.40's and maybe quicker in D/SA.  I used to run a 71 Cougar with a 429CJ in E/SA back in the mid 90's, that had almost no tricks, and ran 11.30's.  In fact, if I had the time to travel to the NHRA races, I would build a stocker engine for our Falcon; with the 4-speed!  I think that the 4-speed combo has more potential, and you would not have to worry about someone else killing the combo by going way under the index, since you would be the only car in the country like it.  Charlie Evans has a lot of experience with stocker engines.  I would talk to him.  A 429 stocker engine is about 1/3 the price of a super stocker, with less maintenance. There is also an option for Edelbrock heads(Super Stock only), carries more horsepower, but reduced the weight on the nose a bunch.  Look at the NHRA classification guide to see where your car would exactly fit, but it should be a natural D/S.  In D/S the car would have to weigh 3543 with driver as a CJ(.500" hydraulic cam and Q-jet) and 3590 with driver as a SCJ (.515" solid cam and 780 Holley).  The D/S index is 11.50 and D/SA is 11.55.  That should be no problem with today's technology.
