Just curious what race head options you feel are lacking?

something comparable to the Chevy "conventional" heads that can take nitrous without consistently eating itself up.

we seen great boosted numbers with the A-heads with zero issues but would like to see more options with the nitrous stuff.

I spoke with AFR last week on the phone. These heads will be very good. They want to have the best CJ head possible. They are working to beat the P-51. IIRC, they will have three different exhaust port heights, std, .250, .625. They said all Ford bolt pattern. Don't believe there will be a Chevy pattern. First ones out this year will be standard location. End of the year .250. Early next year .625. It was his guess. They will make both an open plane intake AND a dual plane. Price est. 2700 and up assembled a pair he said was a guess. They are currently testing them and don't want to bring them to market until they are completely ready.

Sounds good to me.

Are these going to require a dedicated piston like P51's or SCJ's?

Yes. The AFR's have their own valve location/angle, different from anything currently available.

Yes and no.. MAC versus IBM, if enough people don't buy, then there is an issue with anyone getting the pistons for a reasonable cost. You drastically cut your market window when you have $3000 or so of head and another grand or more in pistons.... than if someone could just get the heads.

But, if the valve layout is the same as the SCJ/P51 head, your pretty much just offering another label with that same head. Not much else you can improve/change with the exact same layout.

By requiring a special piston, you just cut your market down to the few guys planning to go completely through their motor or those building a new one from the ground up. Ignoring the largest market segment, those gazillions of people with short blocks set up for standard valve angles, is about the dumbest way to create and market a product you could ever imagine. I just don't get it.

It's like they do it on purpose just to piss us Ford guys off!

From a marketing perspective, I would say yes.

IMO AFR missed a huge opportunity to grab all those guys that would love to have a head with the capability of a P51, but do not want to tear the whole motor damn apart to do so.  Instead of differentiating their target market from the competition, they chose to target the exact same specialized group.  The problem is compounded by their decision to change the port shape and develop their own intake.   Question

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to see more choices for good BBF heads.  Unfortunately for AFR, the vast majority of us are unable to take advantage of that additional choice.

I don't know much about designing a cylinder head but if you design a head with the same port architecture and valve layout of what already out there than what is there to gain. The AFR head will have to out perform, be priced right and be available to sell IMO. It is just to new speculate.
