Freeze Plug Empty Freeze Plug

What you guys think of using rubber freeze plugs with the bolt in the center that expands for sealing the plug to block?

Maybe I have just been lucky but I have used them, (and even re-used them) a number of times in the past & never had any problems with them.

I've actually used them for long term. The 460 I swapped into my 86 would blow frost plugs out occasionally. The one up under the motor mount could not be replaced so I used one of those rubber ones in there. That was over 12 years ago and it is still going strong. I would use the proper one if it is accessible however.

No, just had one with slow leak so I replaced it.

Core plugs are great for casting blocks.




Other than that who cares what kind of plug you put in there. We just thread the holes and run a screw in plug with sealant.

To be honest I have no idea what size they are.  We had an old man give us a bunch of machining stuff and we just happened to make them work.  I'm not sure what size bbf plugs are.  When we did use press in plugs we used permatex glue to seal them.

I think it takes two taps to cut them, can't remember tho for sure, I just used the regular brass ones with red lock tight as Lem suggested, its worked great on the last 3 motors.

It takes an 1-1/4" NPT tap some say you need only one some say you need two taps starter and bottoming.

Thanks, 69 but i was meaning like something about putting screws in 45 degree angle that allows head of screw to hold the plug in case it try blow out.I tried my car last week and one came out  affraid on one hell of a ride.I was bless not to hit wall so now i got a tester to hook it the rad. check pressure.

Freeze Plug Empty screws

John,
My dad always just took the soft plug to the vice and drilled 2- 1/8" holes across from each other about 1/4 of the way down the soft plug. Then drive it in the block and use the hole as a guide for whatever size drill bit you need for the size screw your using. I believe he used #6 screws about a 1/2" long and he only drilled into the block about a 1/4". He also put red locktite on the plug before driving it in.  Hope this helps. we had a 351 windsor that we pinned every soft plug, that was for a roundy round car though. Eventually we started putting the screw in type in.
