Jesel lifters vs Bushing Lifters Empty Jesel lifters vs Bushing Lifters

Post  windsor March 5th 2014, 6:14 pm

I've done the obligatory searching on the subject, but didn't see a real answer to this specific type of question.

If one were to be willing to spend $1000 - $1500 on a set of lifters (.904 to .937 in diameter) would the Jesel tie bar be the only consideration or would the newer bubbas with bushings be an option from those such as Crower, Morel, and Isky?

(Context of the build: plenty of street miles, Drag Week endurance style of build/camshaft profile).

Thanks for any input. Very Happy

Chris straub [a major dist. of morel products] made a post a few days ago about the pro/con of the bushing/needle thing [it was on yb I think]. He said the bushings do not like dirty oil....said to change oil every 1,000 miles with that style lifter.

As far as the needle stuff goes...the Jesel stuff is in different time zone than what most sportsman racers use.

Thanks, Lem. Yes, I read Chris Straub's post on the bushing needing more attention in the oil department.

If one were to be willing to change the oil at that frequency, which would be a 'better' lifter? (I know that's very subjective).

I'll not offer an opinion relative to the bushed style lifters, being that i have not plowed that ground personally. It is often said that everyone is entitled to their opinion but, it is my opinion that legit opinions should be based on some kind of direct observation....which I have none of. I'm all ears at this point about the bushed units.

I concur, Lem, which is why I ask these questions.

From my (online) reading mostly on YB, almost all those with feedback like them for longevity. I wonder if that is due to paying closer attention to valvetrain after the addition or if they're truly more suitable to this kind of street use.

Otherwise, Jesel tie bar is best for a needle bearing?

IMHO there is not anything on the planet close to the Jesel lifter. The rest are salmon eggs to the Jesel caviar.

A very wise man once told me, "you have more invested in the equipment opening and closing your valves, then most do in their complete short block".

That's not a bad thing in my book. That's where I'm willing to spend the money to make this build live for its intended purpose.

I never thought my "Mr. T" starter kit would be worth enough to put in the vault.   Laughing The lifters on the other hand are hid very well, where only but a few in Kentucky can see them.

I almost wanted to touch one of those lifters but I was not allowed.  Mad

Just to be clear, we are talking about the jesel tie bar, non-tool steel, correct? I'm not willing to spend the moula for that next step up.

Tie bar,,,,,,,,,, yes
Sportsman model,,,,,,,,,,,, NO!

$2700.00 when I bought mine. You might be able to get them a little cheaper.

I put the Crower, bushed axle type in the 618...so far so good.
Just thinking, about all of the heavy duty diesel engines that have used that design for years.

Thanks, Keith. I'm really torn on this since they are all so close in price. I kow Morel is also coming out with a 937 bushed bearing lifter as well.

Don't forget Diesels engines = lower rpm, lower spring pressures and very mild lobes.

Oh for sure.
Although the injector lobe sees lots of peak load.

I'd think if someone put a mild performance lobe and had realistic rpm and hp expectations the solid roller lifter would last as good as any other parts.

Problem arise wanting to use giant drag race lobes, big RPM and the monster springs required to hold it all in.

I am really happy with the condition of the Isky Stage 2 .904 bushed lifters I've been running in my 588" Drag Week style pump gas motor. They came out looking just about perfect after around 8000 miles, two Drag Weeks and maybe a hundred other laps at other events.

REv Drag Race/HCX lobes, 230 on the seat/710 open springs. 7600 shift point. but you know all that.
